Market Kitchen

I agree with all the comments made about Market Kitchen. The program was awful. The setting was too large and gave a "barny" effect very impersonal, bad camera work and people devoid of personality. Bring back Jeni she would put some life into it.

I have to agree with SmithyL. I can see how Market Kitchen could appeal to a die-hard foodie. But, while I'm sort of in the "food" business, I do not spend a lot of time cooking exotic recipes.

I watch food programmes because I *enjoy* them and find them very entertaining. Yes, once and a while it even inspires to try to cook something new. Certainly GFL did for me on more than one occasion.

My reaction to MK is eactly as jcj1967, it is interminable dull. I can't explain why - but it just is.

Yes, this thread stretches for 19 pages but there's more than even this thread.

The show is simply a dud.

There is absolutely no way anyone would know what Waitrose is or isn't thinking about the sponsorship except someone at Waitrose, which might explain a few things.

This type of information is commercial-in-confidence and highly guarded. UKTVFood or MK producers wouldn't have a clue as advertising rates, etc are all predicated on this very sensitive information.

One could guess, though, by the dismal ratings for MK that some people would not be very happy at present. Looking at the link provided by rosti, MK didn't even appear?! Not good at all.

For sure, though, there is probably not a single soul on the planet that knows what ALL the sponsors are thinking, not even rosti. This info is just too sensitive to the business. Me thinks that specific comment was just made up, FreddyG.

"Waitrose is more than pleased with their sponsorship deal. No question of that, as are the other companies involved."

Have you got a source/link for this? I'd be interested to see it.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any amount of complaining, moaning, wingeing and whining is going to make the slightest bit of difference - and I'm as guilty as the next of it."

Hallelujah, at last people are realizing that a couple of dozen whingers are not going to be listened to or make a difference.

Waitrose is more than pleased with their sponsorship deal. No question of that, as are the other companies involved.

RIP, Market Kitchen. You couldn't have expired FAST enough for us!!! Angry Angry

Good riddance to such terrible programming.

I've posted this on another thread too, but think that it's also valid here.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any amount of complaining, moaning, wingeing and whining is going to make the slightest bit of difference - and I'm as guilty as the next of it.

The sponsorship deal signed by Waitrose for the program was only for one year; so I think we'll just have to wait until it expires to see what's what.

I am fully in agreement with 'jcj1967's comment. I am quite amazed that this board now stretches to 19 pages of mostly bitter complaint about Market Kitchen, its programme content, the quality of its presenters and the appalling lack of feedback from the producers. Possibly the UKTV operatives who commissioned the series have chosen to ignore the comments from the paying public in the hope that the programme will mercifully disappear along with their embarassment - or perhaps they are just taking the p***

If the programme creators consider Market Kitchen to be a valid contribution providing general food interest and valuable cooking instruction for the viewers then I think it rests with them to respond to the criticism that has been showered on it ever since its first appearance. Considering that UKTV holds my address details I would consider a reply, or even a personal individual mailing to all on the message board, perfectly acceptable otherwise I am obliged to conclude that no person is actually accountable for Market Kitchen and that is why it continues. I bet someone from Waitrose has seen the views expressed. Angry

I rarely watch UKTV Food now. When GFL was on, I used to watch it regularly and it gave me the 'cooking bug' which meant I'd stay tuned for lots of the other programmes.

I've tried to watch Market Kitchen but found it and its presenters so interminably dull (as well as the fact that I don't find them particularly credible) that I have given up on it and now rarely bother to see what else is on the channel these days.

I have been a viewer of UKTV Food for many years and watched GFL from the beginning. I have to admit that there were the odd times when I would go off it and not watch for a while, but on the whole I found it informative and interesting to watch. It would hold my attention for the hour it was on and I enjoyed the relaxed and informal atmosphere. Whilst I felt Jenni could sometimes be a little overbearing, on the whole she was an excellent presenter, someone who asked the questions of chefs that I would like to ask. I enjoyed watching her interview guests as she seemed genuinely interested in all that they had to say and her interraction with the chefs was excellent. To say she became bigger than the show is a little harsh, to me she made it an entertaining as well as informative programme and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Having tried (and failed) to watch MK several times, I think the difference between the two programmes was the fact that GFL had a presenter and a format that encouraged people to watch, whether you enjoyed cooking or not, where MK would perhaps only appeal to dedicated cooks. And if a programme like GFL would encourage those of the viewing public who might not enjoy cooking to get in the kitchen and cook, then that's no bad thing.

For me, and I presume many other viewers, it's not simply Jenni Barnett that is missed, it's the whole package that was GFL.

Am with you there Barshedale. I am one of the posters who try to ignore the posts which relate to Jeni Barnett as I don't feel that they contribute in any positive sense to what this board should be about - food and food programmes. But more importantly, rather than get into a pointless debate about the merits of a presenter - like many others I suspect, I've elected not to post.

I'm not saying that all of my posts have been erudite and valuable (far from it!) but it's just dawned on me that the board now exudes such negativity that it's not fun any more..... Shame.

cheers

Listen up UKTVFood, Market Kitchen isn't welcome into our homes.

Well how can you speak in the plural?
You certainly do not represent my views.
Turn it off

has ruined the whole channel and this board as well.

The biggest contributing factor to this board being ruined over the last few months is the continual bleating from the same old faces constantly going on about a show that died 9mths. ago.
JB became bigger than the show which is TV suicide and the point has been proven by yourselves.
Where is she now?
What channel is she on?
What is she doing?
Bring her back.
etc. etc. etc.
Just look at how many regular and long standing posters do not even bother to voice an opinion anymore. Why? Probally just sick and tired of reading the same old thing over and over again.
Can't you just forget it all now, instead of constantly quoting the same posts over and over again. It's like a stuck record.
You can find her on a Local Radio Station and I believe doing voice overs shortly, on a rehashed Ready, Steady, Cook format programme. There, all you have to do is tune in. No compulsion to watch UKTV Food, which by the way is still televising as it has always done ie. repeats of mainstream channel programmes with, as budget allows, over all the UKTV Channels, original commissions. How on earth one programme can destroy a channel that hasn't changed it's ethos one iota escapes me to be truthfull.
As has been said many times before. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Perhaps then this board may start to return to some level of normality.

I for one am sick and tired of this show every evening. I try every night and within the first fifteen minutes am off to do something else.

I don't really think it too much to ask to have an entertaining daily food programme, is it?

But Franci's comments put it all into perspective. MK has ruined the whole channel and this board as well.

Reg, the list was just a tiny, tiny sampling of the names that were critical of Market Kitchen. It didn't include any of the names found on the GFL boards or Food Chat etc. There were just too many to compile.

Glad you've grown to love the program, even if it is for the "wrong reasons" Develish

As others have predicted this show is not long for this world. It just fails to excite or provide any passion. I still remember the halcyon days of Great Food Live as does Franci above.

The sense of community and great fun on the boards made it a joy to participate. GFL stimulated that sense of passion.

Sadly UKTVFood in their infinite wisdom has now ruined that, probably for good.

Yes like everything in this world GFL had it's flaws, but as you say HaitchB it was entertaining and a great food show.

One of the consequences of it's axing, apart from in my case at least having nothing to watch at lunch time to justify stopping working, is the affect is has had on the message board.

GFL brought with it a tremendous feeling of comraderie in it's audience which spilled over onto the message board. Long before I made my first post I had picked up so much in the way of tips, hints and advice from various posters, often inspired by something that had been on a recent GFL programme. For example Rosti was, as now, a fund of useful knowledge.

In that respect MK does not seem to inspire the same involved response as GFL did which is sad for the boards, and for the programme.

If I accidentally click the channel on and then off does it count me as a viewer of MK? I would be most disturbed if it did.

Hi all

Watched the Market Kitchen repeat this morning and thought that it was really entertaining. The rapport between Tom amd Matthew is good and the natural banter between them and the guest chef Angela Harnett was great. I really rate Angela as a chef and I think that her cooking style and the way she explains her recipes are great. I'm going to try the grappa granita!
