Pancetta Alternative?

Thread Starter: Sophie 23    Started: Tue 21 Nov 2006    Replies: 4

For Religious preference i do not eat any Pig meats. Some recipes which look absolutely gorgeous and dainty require meats like pancetta to use as a wrap. Is there anything I can use instead? Can I make an alternative from any other meat as sliced Halal meats are almost non-existent in the UK (hey that could be a great new market! hmmm...). Obviously I could use smoked salmon but half the stuff made would not go well with salmon at all. Help!

Thanks everyone! I like the idea of quorn rashers, will definitely try and find some and have a go. Turkey would have been a great idea but as mentioned Halal slices are almost impossible to find.

I use the quorn rashers when making my fake coq au vin with quorn and they taste very nice but it depends on what you are doing I think, they don't wrap around things too well but are nice cooked in casseroles.

What about some of these bacon alternatives, perhaps you wouldn't be able to have the turkey rashers but what about the vegetarian version?

theres no really similar alternative to pancetta that i can think of, depending on the recipe, you could possibly use a blanched savoy cabbage leaf.
