Malted milk powder

Thread Starter: nouska    Started: Mon 09 Oct 2006    Replies: 6

Have come across a Jo' Pratt recipe for a great sounding cake containing malted milk powder in both cake & filling. WHAT IS IT??? I can't think it's Horlicks which is what I always believed malted milk powder to be. Can anyone enlighten me??

I thought Ovaltine was available in the ordinary (ie, malted milk flavour) and a chocolate flavour? I could be wrong however.

I am in the Uk too, so I know what Ovaltine is sold as. I just find it to be brown in colour with a chocolatey flavour, not pale like horlicks is. I am not suggesting that is not good for the recipe you use it in, but merely pointing out that if you did not want a brown chocolatey finish then perhaps horlicks would be better. It would just depend what the recipe is that the original poster wants to use it in!

Hi there, I don't know where about you are but the ovaltine in Britain is sold as a malted milk drink, I would never describe it as a chocolate drink, the loaf recipe I have using ovaltine is very malty and deliciosly sticky if kept for a few days. Riitta

I would have thouht that Ovaltine would give a chocolate flavour, which might not be desired. Perhaps Horlicks (not the instant stuff) would be more appropriate!

I have a recipe requiring malted milk powder and it suggests using Ovaltine.
