preggers and need to eat cheese!

Thread Starter: AHG    Started: Tue 22 Aug 2006    Replies: 5

hey. just found out that im in early stages of pregnancy and are aware that i must avoid certain cheeses etc. Can anyone tell me whether i am ok eating parmesan and grand padano (the latter of which is made from unpasturised milk apparently). I cant really find any listings about this and im not going to doctors til next week.
Also can i eat any type of blue cheese - or is it all out of bounds?

I also lived and died on pate, soft cheeses and peanuts when I was preggers I also only had unpastuerised milk (straight from the farm in a jug ) but when my daughter was pregnant she could eat none of these,

Hello AHG ! Congratulations on your pregnancy !
You see, I'm half Italian and I can assure you that I ate lots of Parmesan during my pregnancy, as all Italian mammas do ... and my "baby" (who's now 31 !) grew beautifully well.
Now Parmesan is with no conservatives whatsoever, while Grana Padano may have some (according to the quality you can find). So if you feed organic, Parmesan is best.
Good luck !

I think the normal thing they recommend for pregnant women is not to eat soft cheeses as they can harbour listeria. Also they say not to eat pate as it contains a lot of vitamin a (which you get from liver) as too much can be harmful to the baby. I bit of a bugger for me cos I really craved pate when I was pregnant!

As long as the cheese is pasturised - it's fine.
