Im so sad...why did they feel the need to show the cow being stunned and have its throat cut...my daughter was sobbing her heart out earlier....to show the cow all doe eyed, soft and furry then to show what happened to it....im not a veggie by any means but I think it may be a long time before i eat red meat...i shed a good few tears tonight.

And its not like the pigs are in cramp conditions but have plently of space and the children are caring for them- it seems the best option that their happy and healthy and well looked after - theres worst in factory farming. Frown

Well Gordon has 2 pigs called Trinny and Susannah for sausages,he,s keeping them in his garden and involving his children in feeding and talking to them on which parts of the animals make which cuts of meat. Its after the watershed,so the only people who might be upset will be veggies.

Gordons was after the watershed and after the ad break there was an warning saying that the turkeys would be killed and some may find it distressing. but im not so sure about Full on food. Confused

Was there any warning as to the content of the show? Or what was about to happen? Was it on after the watershed?

No apologies required spangled. I just said it as I see it and maybe, because I feel very strongly about it, may have sounded as though I was standing on my soap box!

It is only if these animals are killed for no reason whatsoever by people & left to rot away, now that would be an outrage. But they are being killed for consumption & we do actually eat them to live, why can't some folks accept this.
Carol I may have misread some of your post,so apologies given to you if that was the case Embarrassed Smile

But with Gordon Ramsey- he was setting out to show how peoples turkey's arrived on their tables and by them complaining it proved his point that they don't like to think where it comes from and not want to like that it was once a living animal. I think as long as the animals were well looked after while alive and they had a good life, if you don't use all of the animal eg, make gelatine, trotters etc. it's a can of insult that the animals life was cut short in vain and not to fulfil it's purpose. But as a nation we get "outraged" too quickly over small things!!

good on them i say! i've got no problem with it whatsoever as long as it's shown after the watershed, i think its ridiculous for people to whinge about it, just switch channels if you don't like what you see for goodness sake!

I see the public complaints about the F Word and Jamie Olivers programme have been thrown out by The TV Complaints Commission.

Well said Cheese Obsessive! The programme was aired before the watershed but it made it very clear what was going to happen long before you see the cow slaughtered.

i'm a strict vegitarian, and i agree with carol, people should be aware of how meat is slaughtered, i think that people should respect the food they eat, and that knowing where it comes from helps people to do so. i dont think slaughter like that should be aired before the watershed (i dont know whether or not it was) and i dont think children should watch it but they should be educated about where there food comes from, but dont forget people, you can always change channels if you dont want to watch!

I can understand the upsets about the little one etc Hug beccasmum ,but children should be taught how we get our meat, not in a harsh way mind you,but it is a fact of life(since the caveman days/survival,we are all individuals & make choices as & when the situation arises.I'm sure we are all aware as adults how it gets to our plate Carol & we are all entitled to an opinion too,so c'mon get off your high horse & leave people to make their own minds up,eh!! Wink

ALL meat eaters should know how the meat got to their plate and I don't mean how it was cooked!!!

In Kitchen showdown the families are shown how to skin rabbits, and gut ducks. Gordon Ramsay slaughters Turkeys for Christmas, if you don,t want to watch switch off.

Whereas I agree that a lot of youngsters don't seem to know much about the food chain. In an experiment we did a while back we asked the kids where their milk came from and the answer was a supermarket name.

When asked which animals we got milk from, we got much more sensible and knowing answers.

Sentimentalism!

I might suggest it was unnecessary footage, if it was shown without the usual "warnings".

It's my understanding that electricity is used, precisely because it's quick i.e. quick to stun large animals/quick to kill small ones.

Of course it's controversial, but it does seem that half this kind of issue, is because younger people just don't know where their food comes from

If you ask them where their milk comes from, you're more likely to get the answer "Sainsburys" than you are "cows".

I'm sorry Carol but I disagree. I know that every time I eat meat an animal has died because of it. I also know (near enough) how that animal has died. This is why I choose meat from places who rear their animals in the right way giving them quality of life, during their life.

I absolutely DO NOT NEED to see evidence of these animals being slaughtered on tv. It is unnecessary.

"I think it is vital for people to know the facts about how their 'meat' lives and how it dies."

Fair enough statement, but those people who don't know (in today's enlightened times) obviously don't want to know. Angry

MrsCarolMoore

The reality is, this is how cows, for human consumption, die! You cannot pretend that it doesn't happen. Cows are generally bred for a purpose, meat and milk! I think it is vital for people to know the facts about how their 'meat' lives and how it dies. Only then can they make an informed decision about whether they choose to eat it or not. I think it was very brave of FOF to show such a clip. It moved me to tears also but because I felt for Richard Johnson not for the cow!
