Daughters 14th Birthday Party

Thread Starter: Tulip-Fairy    Started: Fri 05 Aug 2005    Replies: 11

My daughter has asked for a BBQ (come rain or shine!!!) to celebrate her 14th Birthday. Any ideas on what to cook for 20 teenage girls?
A couple are vegetarians, a few are a bit picky but i'd like to do something other than sausages and beefburgers...all suggetions will be greatfully received!!!

Just thought I'd pop back in and let you all know how the party went!

Fantastic...in a word!! Wink Thanks for all your suggestions i finally settled on;
toasted (on BBQ) pitta breads
with garlic dip - cheese & chive dip to start

BBQ Chicken legs, parmasan chicken strip,
garlic and basil marinated pork ribs
sausage and potato kebabs
garlic and herb wedges (cheated and did them in the oven!)
Halloumi and cherry tomato kebabs
Big bowl of chopped salad
Homemade coleslaw

to finish i opted for Jennifer264 idea of the mini ice creams on sticks - went down a storm

But the best bit was the chocoalte and strawberry gateaux birthday cake with chocolate spikes and whole strawberries on top - I'd post a picture if i knew how to do it! Confused

So thanks again guys for some great inspiration!

You have to try bananas split down the midddle with clotted cream and chocolate chunks put in (peel on) cooked on the bbq until skins go almost black and the cream and chocolate have melted together very easy and everyone loves them

Thanks Jennifer264 I like the sound of the ice creams on a stick...i think after i've done all that i'll probably be glad of just opening the freezer door for pud!!!

I would go with the Haloumi cheese, cherry tomato mushroom and a little tip to make them a bit more substantial.. boil some baby new potatoes to thread on as well. All brushed witha nice garlic or basil oil and your vegetarians will be happy. Not so with the fish in foil I fear though..
Some big bowls of pasta salad, rice , coleslaw whatever you feel like making and they will be eating well.
A nice little tip for an easy pud.. is a bowl of Magnum, Malteser type ice creams on sticks makes a very popular pud for teens, and you can leave them to it. Good luck and happy birthday to your little growing up baby!! Smile

Even though it is a BBQ you could do some other food in the oven as well eg veggie lasagne/curry/chilli etc. The other advantage is that they can be prepared ahead of time.

ok i think chicken kebabs have to be on the menu along with the haloumi and cherry tomatoes ones. I like the idea of the bbq'd fruit too.
We have done the marshmallows before, we sandwiched them in between chocolate biscuits after they had gone all gooey from the BBQ...yummy but the fruit n ice cream sounds a lot healthier!!

Thanks for the birthday greetings kirsty

I too have a BBQ to arrange for teenage girls though not as many as 20!! I don't think you can go wrong with kebabs. You could prepare them in advance by putting marinated chicken and veg on skewers. We like them served in pitta bread with salad and homemade salsa. Good luck!! Big Grin

Chops and ribs, steaks, chicken wings and drumsticks, kebabs and satays for meat eaters.

Fish in foil, as kebabs or steaks (ie tuna) and large tiger prawns for the fish eaters.

For the vegetarians, corn on the cob, peppers, thickly sliced onions, beefsteak tomatoes, large field mushrooms (all brushed with oil and topped with cheese if liked) aspargus, baby leeks, sliced aubergines and courgettes. Slices of haloumi are lovely or again done as kebabs with cherry tomatoes and onion or peppers.

Pasta salads, new or jacket potatoes, plenty of salad, vegetables and dips.

Then bbq'd slices of fruit, apple, banana, pineapple, plums, you think of it, with icecream for afters if you like, and don't forget the toasted marshmallows (unfortunately they are rarely veggie though but some veggies do accept having gelatin)

Don't know if girls are as fussy as boys but my two sons loved BBQ chicken (partically cooked in the oven makes this quicker) and fish always came in handy cooked in foils for the vegetarians.

Chicken satay with peanut sauce (check for nut allergies)always goes down well with everybody.Barbecued sweetcorn is fantastic and easy to do.Various kebabs, both meat, vegetarian and fruit.Baked banana with chocolate goes down a storm.

You could try king prawns, fish, vegetables e.g. corn, peppers etc. Happy Birthday to your daughter!
