Veggie (no fish) with a wheat & dairy intolerence - HELP!!! ;D; ;D; ;D; :p:

Thread Starter: Roasted    Started: Wed 27 Jul 2005    Replies: 17

Can anyone please help me... PLEASE!!!

My best mate is having a Spanish themed party and so wants me to make some tapas and sangria, not a problem there, but one of her friends has an allergy to dairy and wheat. This alone would be fine but she also won't eat meat or fish.

I need quick and easy receipes (can't take too long, have a tendency to drink the sangria whilst cooking).

Only thing I can think of so far is Patas bravas and mini veg kebabs on cocktail sticks.

Also, any tried and tested sangria's, mine always tend to be a bit strong, oops.

Lastly, the party is on Saturday night but haven't got access to a computer after 4pm Friday. Any help will be greatly received

I'm as carnivourous as they come but sometimes you have to do things a bit different don't you. To be honest, it took everyone a while to realise that it was all veggie, let alone that it was intolerence free. Also, I quite enjoy the challenge.
Thank again everyone. No doubt I'll be back with more taxing party's soon

Thats brilliant, well done for sticking to your guns and making the effort.

Its great when it all goes well and im sure everyone will have enjoyed the alternative recipes. Infact although i am a meat eater i do tend to go for veggie options when eating out as they are often quite different and tasty.
Thanks for letting us know how it went

cheers

That's lovely to hear..it's nice when someone lets us know what happens. To those who wonder why anyone would bother to cook for the unusual diets, your post says it all. What a nice friend you are.. I bet it was worth the hangover Big Grin

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for your help. The food went down a storm (as did the sangria - ow my head hurt on Sunday!)

In the end a did a couple of the tapas receipes suggested by you all such as hummus, garlic mushrooms and roasted veg, then also did a big vat of veggi chilli (not very spanish I know) and made some of this into nachos with the rice based cheese. It was all delish and Faye was so grateful that we had tears. Thank you all again Big Grin

You could always try the dreaded google, or even Yell for a tapas or spanish restaurant and see if they have a menu on their website for ideas, (I know at least one that does, try looking for one in Richmond on Thames) there should be a vegetarian section on the menu. Tongue

Hi there, thought i'd tell you about a salad my Great Grandmother used to make and I still do... Its called Vinegar Salad. Chop some lettuce, tomato's,cucumber and onion. Put them in a bowl, sprinkle over a tsp or two of normal sugar and then add lots and lots of malt vinegar. Cover it will film, put it in fridge and leave it... Shake it up every few hours or so. The longer you leave it the better it tastes!!! Goes great with everything from cooked meats and cheeses, also tastes fab just eaten by itself. I made it for our recent housewarming party and it went down a storm Big Grin Big Grin

Sorry, should have added some ideas but I had a crazy!! moment lol... anyway a nice bowl of roasted vegetables would go well for meat eaters as well, and not too spicy. There is a good recipe for Chick pea and spinach tapas on site which is easy and tasty.
You can buy a dairy free "cheezly" at Holland and Barratt which you could use too.
I think you are a great friend to have and well done for caring that's a lovely thing to do,
Jenny

Thanks everyone. Normally I would just do a big mixed salad and sweet potatoe wedges for her and then focus on what I want to cook/eat (God I love food), but she's had a really hard time recently and been extremely ill and so I wanted to make a bit of a fuss of her.

Can't believe I hadn't thought of garlic mushrooms. Do you reckon I can get away with hummus and guaccamole as Spanish dips - hope so, I love these.

I did see on you are what you eat last night that you can get rice cheese, so again non dairy, just a case of finding it now I suppose.

Anymore receipes greatfully received as I'm feeding 20 of us buffet/tapas style. Think I'm still going to do meatballs and a prawn dish. These things are just here to try me I'm sure, my mother-in-law is allergic to dairy, doesn't like spicy and has severe ulcers in her mouth and throat so won't have any vinegars or anything, but that's another story.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to please someone who clearly does not like food. Having a food intolerance is unfortunate but to then choose not to eat meat or fish is crazy.I would do a mixed salad which anyone can eat as well.

It shouldn't be a problem at all, don't forget all the Middle Eastern snack dishes like felafel, houmos/tehina,etc You can make potato rosti...grated potato fried in olive oil and veggie dips like ratatouille. Veggie wedges like potato wedges with sweet potato and a spicy garlicy butter bean dip, Just use your imagination its all out there, look it up

Why cater to one non-meat eater? Do what you want and one veggie dish. The best veggie dish I know is Imam Bayildi (The Imam Fainted)- basically aubergines stuffed with an onion, garlic and tomato stuffing and baked with tomato juice. It is FANTASTIC!

Roasted - what a pain in the Eek - all tapas revolve around meat/fish so if she was on atkins then simple... if it were me I would suggest she BYO, however, as I am sure you are a kinder soul then me I would suggest garlic mushrooms (always on tapas menus), and maybe you could diversify with some aubergine and tomato tossed with olive oil and mozzarella. I know it is not essentially spanish, but then she is not essentially human! Also, don't worry about her too much - the other 99% will be peeved if it is all vegan/gluten-free/dairy-free poop! Sorry! Hi there, trickey eh Tongue What about stuffed peppers with cous cous or you could use toms if you get the beef type.
If you flavour the couse cous with plenty of olive oil and herbs with fresh lemon it would be really tasty
Of course there is garlic mushrooms using olive oil spread instead of butter.
Houmous is dead easy to make I do mine in the microwave in minutes.
There is also a spicey tomato and chilli dip for your roasted veg kebabs
I think if you look at more morrocan or turkish food rather than spanish it will have a similar flavour but they do use more veggie recipes and not a lot of wheat or dairy so would be easier for you to try.
You may also want to use alternatives such as Aubergine instead of pasta for a lasagne etc.
Hope you get on ok and let us know
cheers
