I am just south of the border and in Northumberland we have our own version of the clootie however try this site for a few variations and some info to add to Fantasia's.

Actually it says

"Sometimes spelt "Clootie" it gets its name from the "clout" or cloth in which it was traditionally boiled. This is a favourite at Christmas time and there have been many variations over the years as cooks have experimented. You may be glad to know that it doesn't have to be made in a "clout"!

After the first recipe below, there is another Cloutie Dumpling recipe - this time a tried and tested one from "Granny Geal" - provided on the Scottish Culture Forum! "

But never mind, I am sure all variations are nice and wouldn't disregard anyone's.

Sorry Fantasia, but Breadmaker, I wouldn't listen to the recipe on the website! They say it's a traditional Scottish recipe, but it isn't!

ooh breadmaker, I think I might be able to help there, being a Scotswoman! We have a recipe at home for 'Bennett's Duff' (our surname being Bennett!) which is just clootie dumpling, but my grandad called it something else. Here's the recipe:

8oz Self Raising Flour
2oz Breadcrumbs
4oz Suet
4oz Caster Sugar
1 Tsp Mixed Spice
12oz Currants
12oz Sultanas
2 Eggs
1 Tbsp Treacle
Buttermilk

Mix together, place in a piece of muslin or a clean pillowcase and steam for 2-3 hours! Hope this helps! Smile
