Fish bone problem

Thread Starter: Sonia 2611    Started: Thu 02 Jun 2005    Replies: 15

I have posted this under 'off the menu' too but seeing as it's about ingredients (in a way) I thought I'd post it here too. Also because not everyone reads 'OTM'.
Hope someone can help me here..........I've got a fish bone stuck at the back of my throat. I had a trout for dinner last night and got a bone stuck. I have tried chewing bread in large pieces trying to dislodge it but to no avail. Also tried sneezing, wretching (sorry) but it won't budge. Besides going to the doctor does anyone know what else might help budge it? It's driving me nuts as there's a constant tickle at the back of my throat. Help please!!!

Hi all............it's Sunday a.m. and luckily the fish bone seems to have dissappeared!! Can't feel any irritation at all so hopefully it has passed (!!!). The only side effect was indigestion from all the bread, rice and bananas I consumed trying to dislodge it. Hope everyone has a good Sunday and thanks again for all your kind words.

Well I woke up this morning and could feel that it had moved. There wasn't the constant tickle at the back of my throat but I could still feel something when I swallowed. So I called the doctor and explained what had happened and she seemed to think that it might be now running it's course. If I still feel it there by Monday then I have to go for a visit - and probably an x-ray as it sounds like it is too far down to see. So I'm hoping that it will slowly work it's way out naturally. Thanks to all for your concern - will keep you informed. By the way someone mentioned eating bananas so I tried that too - last night I had rice with my dinner followed by bananas so that might have helped a bit.

Back to simple old Nick again :)

There might be a chance that it's scratched your oesophagus and it feels like it's still there - But don't leave it long. Best to get it checked straight away, even if it means A&E. Chances are Triage will do it for you

I've tried locating it with a torch in my mouth but it must be quite far down as I can't see it. Will keep you informed. Thanks everyone.

Sonia, I did not feel a thing, just gagged a bit, but do as Mary says, get it seen to. The longer you leave it the more difficult it will be to remove the bone.

Let us know how you get on.

Sonia you will be fine. You really need to get it dealt with as if you let it stay there you could get an infection. Go to A&E or phone your GP. Do it NOW!

Oh my lord.........just the thought of having long curved tweezers stuck down my throat..........I feel sick!!! Do you feel anything Livewire or is the throat completely numb? I'm supposed to be going out for dinner tonight and having.....fish.....think I'll stick to fillets from now on.

This happened to me a few years ago Sonia. It was a Sunday and I went to the emergency room at the local hospital. They sprayed my throat to numb it and used a pair of very long curved tweezers to remove the bone. I could not speak for quite a while after (due to the spray), but it was worth it to get rid of the bone.

I still eat fish, the experience did not put me off.

Doctor I think. If bread won't dislodge it I can't suggest anything else. How annoying for you, I hope you get it sorted out soon.
