Potato Masher

Thread Starter: Essex Girl    Started: Mon 07 Mar 2005    Replies: 21

Has anyone got one of those strange looking potato mashers?Lakeland call them "spudnik," but I have seen them in other cook shops.I was wandering if these are any good. I don't want to buy another usless kitchen gadget.I can't find the words to discribe this masher, but the book says you roll and rotate, rather than pound the potatoes. Smile

Seems so strange people saying "old fashioned potato masher"
My Gran, years ago said "What do you want that new fangled rubbish for? a fork and a bit of elbow is all you need."

I swear by a potato ricer I bought from Lakeland about 4 - 5 years ago - white plastic casing (but heavy duty plastic) with 3 different sized ricing disks. Luckily I have a dishwasher as I wouldn't want to wash it by hand!!! However, for the lately fashionable "crushed" potatoes, the old fashioned potato masher is the best!!! Take care all.

I use a Mouli legume to make my mash. Same principle to a ricer but it has a handle (great for blokes because its a machine). Makes perfect mash. I use my regular potato masher for mashing beans and chickpeas for beanburgers. It gives a perfect texture ie not too fine and not too course.

I can't stop myself from buying kitchen gadgets even though some have turned out to be useless. But my potato masher is an old fashioned one which I got as a wedding present 21 years ago, but after reading these posts i'm tempted to buy a ricer. Wink

Just bought a potato ricer and it makes the smoothest mash ever. I just put it in hot water with washing up liquid then scrub and rinse. Wink

It is quick and easy to use, and very easy to wash up. Smile

Naah, old fashioned potato masher for me. Takes up less storage space in the cupboard, and better if there is only two of you to mash for. Big Grin

Potato Ricer for me too. In large batches (less washing up)
slash the skins
steam in pressure cooker over inverted veg basket
peel
rice
add milk/cream/salt / whatever
portion and freeze
----
potato ricer is like an enormous garlic press, with different sized holes/gratings. Makes excellent mash, but a bit fiddly to clean, hence the batch method.
