Where to buy Fresh Herbs on line ?

Thread Starter: SaraL    Started: Fri 04 Mar 2005    Replies: 11

Please can anyone help....I think I must live in the back of beyond.. my local supermarket has stopped selling packs of fresh herbs AAGHH, they only sell pathetic little growing pots with no smell and even less taste. No matter how much I ask or complain they will not relent. I have tried to search the internet to buy online but can only find trade sites, does anyone know of any sites that sell fresh herbs to Joe Bloggs. It's been 4 weeks now and we are in some serious need of Asian food...much frustrated from UP NORTH !!!!!! Angry Angry

SaraL -

After a bit of browsing around I found this site. They must have closed their old site and opened this new one.

Thanks:- Terrydox-Alnwick Farmers Market has not sold fresh herbs for the past 2 years unfortunately.
Relishmama:- It's ok to freeze hardy herbs but the main herbs I use are coriander, basil, mint, dill & tarragon. I use them a lot in South East Asian cooking/salads/noodles so need them fresh, I am able to grow some herbs but I agree it may be time to invest in a polytunnel...I already grow my own garlic, shallots, onions, carrots and a few other items. But I can't believe that quote "the most popular place to live in the north" does not do fresh herbs, but then again it is hard to find a lot of quality products in Alnwick, but I refuse to change the way I cook, it's my biggest pleasure in life.
It makes matters worse when I watch GFL and the chefs always go on about how easy it is to buy fesh produce in your supermarket and if not speak to the manager...some fat good it does me!!! sorry I'm going of on one..I've just got back from visiting family in York and went back to my old hunting ground of a huge Tesco...I was nearly weeping as I walked round at the range and freshness of stuff, but I'm not giving up that easy...Morrison's aint heard the last of me yet!!!!!

Hi SaraL, has the Farmers market stopped in Alnwick? It used to be the last Friday in the month and the last time I was there, a while ago I must admit, but there was at least one stall selling fresh herbs. Maybe they no longer have a pitch there.

I know that once a month is not great but at least you could freeze some to last until the next market.

There is always the Morpeth market but maybe a bit too far, the Rothbury market is closer to you but I have no idea what stalls they have or again whether it is still held.

I suppose its time to get yourself a polytunnel and grow your own then and freeze them for the winter. and when weather improves you get planting in pots in the garden or window boxes. there are loads of tips on freezing herbs on this site if you do a search for them.
Are you green fingered. Ive got some lovely posters on my forum who are and getting loads of advice on growing my own and great to get the kids involved Smile
Sorry to hear that your farmers market aint much cop.

Prawnfiller & Spiceboy - Thanks for the replies, yes there are some great sites for dries herbs & spices but I have no problem obtaining these, only the fresh.
Relishmama - I live in Alnwick and have had many discussions with Farmers Markets and other suppliers around here but no-one is interested. If it isn't stew or pease puddin' then they sure aint interested. We have just had a new deli open which was supposed to be all singing and dancing and is as useless as the rest of the shops up here. FRUSTRATED SARA in Alnwick !!!!!!!!

Hi SaraL ive been having the same problem in county durham but its a seasonal thing here. So ive tracked down two organic suppliers here who have pollytunells and will be supplying me with fresh stuff for my market. so I suggest you ask at your local farmers market or food group normally backed by your local council who will get you the name of some one who grows it near you.
and its a heck of a lot cheaper than those namby pamby little plastic packs of herbs you get in the supermarkets.

Best of luck and let us know how you get on Smile
