Gravy Salt

Thread Starter: siamese    Started: Mon 29 Nov 2004    Replies: 18

Has anyone got an update on the Gravy Salt famine. I used my last Comptons spoonful last week and am unable to find any suppliers other than in America. Last message I read was that Comptons were going to re-open. Would love to hear from anyone in the know.

Thanks a lot.

You wont have to make do with "Uncle Roy or Jakes" for much longer as the best is back Comptons Gravy Salt will re appear in Morrisons from next week, any problems obtaining stock please ask at your local store. Nisa - Todays members also have stock tel 01724 282028 for your nearest store. As mentioned above the product is available by mail order from the manufacturer. I will keep you posted as more stores begin stocking the product.

I've been using gravy salt for 40 years, my basic gravy is 1 tablespoon flour, organic stock cube to suit the meat, and a heaped teaspoon gravy salt (about the same ammount as one oxo)

I know this is going to sound stupid, but how do you use gravy salt? I bought some a while back and it has no instructions on it, it is sitting unused in my larder as I've never known quite what to do with it...

My uncle has a letter from The Sweet Solution, 51 Walkmill Crescent, Carlisle, Cumbria CA1 2WF I quote as follows:
WE have recently purchased the manufacting equipment from House of York Ltd and are pleased to advised we will start manufacturing in January. Morrisons/Safeway will both be stocking Comptons from Mid Janaury. If you have problems contract your local store manager. In the meantime should you require som gravy salt we will send it to you on receipt of a cheque or Postal order. Due to dwindling stocks the maximum purchas is 3 boxes. 1x£170, 2x£2.80, 3x£403 inclusive of P&P. Cheques payable to Mr. W. Deyermond. Hope this helps.

comptons update. the company that used to produce it shut down several months ago. another company bought their equipment and are about to start production this week i believe. id imagine it would take a couple of months to get on the shop shelves though. a friend of mine found the above info out and actually contacted the new company who sent him some out...cost quite a bit mind..desperate times though!!

Uncle Roy here. Just thought I should clarify the confusion.
1 My Old Fashioned Gravy Salt is the truest to the Burdalls tradition as it contains the same ingredients unlike some others which contain flour (Comptons)and/or artificial anticaking agents (Great Jakes).
2 While other substitutes are available, and you may prefer them, mine is the only one on sale in shops all over Britain and USA (as well as by mail order or internet from various suppliers).

Sort of realised that, but thought by pointing it out might encourage them to give themselves a handle.

Why are you contradicting yourself whoever you are.
First you say Uncle Roys is the only one and now you say Old jakes is better.
Very strange.

I must say I'm very happy with Old Jakes Stronger Stuff version. It's been available for over a year so I don't know why Uncle Roy thinks his is the only one available. I order it from www.oldjake.co.uk

Uncle Roy's Old Fashioned Gravy Salt is an improved (because it uses Sea Salt instead of manufactured salt) version of the defunct Burdalls Gravy Block. Following the demise of Compton's Gravy Salt too, Uncle Roy's Old Fashioned Gravy Salt is now the only traditional Gravy Salt available. Buy from good food shops or on-line at www.uncleroys.co.uk

Comptons are supposed to be reopening according to my local Weigh house but the owner also said do not hold your breath.

Got some liquid gravy browning from the CO OP which sounds similar on the list of ingredients.
