Sainsbury's do a really great goose fat from La Truffe cendrée for £2.99 for 340 g. You can keep this in a kilner jar or air tight container for about three months in the fridge

Get it in Sainsbury'y, have you tried making Cheese straws with goose or duck fat. As James Martin would say divine, divine, divine.

We have goose fat on sale in our very small Somerfield.
Am waiting until it does not sell then will buy it all up at a good price.

Hi MaryJane....relishthecontinental also do excellent goose fat but I don't want to order on line as our postal service down here in the south is diabolical. The Spanish don't send Christmas cards so the postal service isn't able to cope with the amazing amount of mail generated by all of the foreigners down here who send cards both in and out of the area, 3 years ago they ran out of places to store the mail and put 100 bags into an old store room and then promptly forgot about them until mid february.....you don't appreciate the Royal Mail until you live in Spain, in our office we only get one delivery per week normally but at the height of the summer it's one delivery every 2-3 weeks. So I probably wouldn't get my goose fat until Easter !!!!! Sue

Hola Does the cooking and Mijas Pueblo
I'd read this thread the other day and am now doing a spot of online-shopping as I too live in Spain. This site has goose fat [link]
Right... back to ordering my dried mushrooms and tomatoes.

Hi Sue, sounds like good fun in your butcher, better than a trip to Waitrose. Your Spanish sounds like my Italian, my daughter got married in Italy this year and I caused much humour with the locals in Bellagio. I agree with you views on duck, I tend to use one per two people. On the goose front, I will let you know the result, either way the fat of a duck or goose is very good for the Chrismas roast spuds. Good luck with your ordering this year. David

Hi Chef de Maison....yes we have ducks in Spain but I'm always disappointed at how little meat you get once cooked. The village butcher certainly doesn't sell ducks, he doesn't even sell fresh lamb only frozen, he only has chicken, pork and beef. At Christmas you have to order your turkey well in advance and you have no idea the problems I caused by trying to describe what I wanted him to do with the turkey ie de-bone a chicken and wrap it around 2 or 3 lemons then stuff it into a de-boned turkey.
The problems arose because I speak only a little basic Spanish and he has no English (no reason why he should). I had quite an audience, the butchers is the place where all the old ladies go to gossip, chairs are provided, you can imagine my delight when I picked up the bird on Christmas Eve and I actually got what I thought I'd asked for, it's now very popular in the village and he does several every Christmas. My Spanish is somewhat akin to the French policeman's English on 'Allo 'Allo, people who don't know me either look stunned or confused when I try to talk to them Sue

Hi Sue. No goose in Spain? I am surprised as I have eaten goose in France and Italy, why no goose in Spain. I will have to do some research. Pity though, as a fifth of the body weight of a goose is fat and it is the best for roast potatoes and the like. Duck is good too of course, and you do have them, don't you?

if you cant find a goose, use a duck - the fat from that makes wonderful roast potatoes etc. just a thought!

I've never tasted goose so don't know if I will like it and Christmas Day lunch is too sacred to experiment with, anyway I've never seen ganso (that's Spanish for goose) in any butchers or supermarket or indeed any cookery books here in Spain. Sue

Of course you could buy a goose, cook, enjoy and save the fat.

And somerfield and Tesco. There's more availability now and is popping up all over the place.

Many thanks Georgie I'll try both of them and yes he is a really nice boss, the best I've ever had. That's possibly because every month he spends 2 weeks here and 2 weeks in the UK and leaves me to run the office while he's away. Sue

Another thought Sue, try Sainsbury's:

If there is one local perhaps your Boss could call them? Btw, he sounds a really nice Boss!

Just looked on Waitrose.com and there are a few Waitrose in Devon but as I don't know the area I couldn't tell you if they were near Tiverton - perhaps you could have a look:

The goose fat can be found in the chill cabinet (top shelf) where they sell their fresh meat (or at least that is where it is in my Waitrose).

Does anyone know of a supermarket in the Tiverton area of Devon that sells goose fat ? My boss is trying to find some to bring back to Spain for me, he's already tried the local Tesco and they don't have it. One more question, which section of the store is it usually kept in ? Many thanks in anticipation of your help. Sue

You pipped me to the post grubhead! Waitrose definitely sell goose fat and I am sure good deli's do. You can also buy it online too.
