I can recommend Gershwins on Dean Street, a lovely atmosphere with fabulous food, and also if you are lucky, live music too!!! Its not cheap, but when I took my mum the other week, she said her venison was the best she's ever had!!! And she has tried it in quite a few places, as well as cooking it herself.

Scallinis. Its north of the city in a little village/suburb. Its an Italian resturant kind of joined to a pub, its not upmarket but really nice place with fantastic food and atmosphere, sorry cant be more specific.

Try Cafe 21 on Queen Street, just off the Quay Side, the chef that owns it, Terry Laybourne, is superb. Terry was also head chef for the very up-market restaurant at Newcastle United in their St James' Park ground in the middle of the city, this could also be an option if any of you like football. If you 'google' chef Terry Laybourne it will give you lots of info. Sue
