I've often heard the phrase "anti pasta" , what exactly does this mean, or is it self explanatry !!

It is always masculine i.e Antipasto (singular) or Antipasto (plural) Pasto means 'dinner'.

Ante pasta comes from the Latin and the Italian for
Latin: Ante = before, Italian: Pasto = meal, so it's the vourse you have before your main meal. I think that's right!
