what does pumpkin taste like?

Thread Starter: carol2    Started: Fri 29 Oct 2004    Replies: 4

I have bought a pumpkin for the first time to carve for halloween. I was going to look for a recipe to use the leftovers. I was wondering if it tasted like butternut squash because I didn't like the taste of that. I had made soup with it

Apparently the pumpkins sold for Halloween and carving are field pumpkins and not suitable for cooking.
Bit rough and tasteless.

Hi Carol

Pumpkin is fairly sweet but works really well with Spices, Corinander, chilli etc or cheeses such as goats, mozzarella. Or roasted with rosemary, Olive oil etc

Butternut squash is sweeter than the large pumpkin you buy for carving. The larger the pumpkin the softer the flesh and less sweet it is.
I love it and use it all the time. Try roasting it.....cut it into large cubes, toss in flour, then sprinkle with crushed garlic, salt, parmesan cheese, and a good coating of olive oil. Roast in a very hot oven in a low sided tray (if the sides are high the pumpkin will steam instead of roast) until brown around the edges. About 35 minutes.
