Grigson

I notice nobody has aired their thoughts on the new series from Sophie Grigson (or have they and I've missed it?) I have to say I find it rather uninspiring and as for "recipes that our mum's used to make" Confused Not everyone's mum was a gastronome! My mum's dinners were gorgeous pies, roasts, stews and casseroles - delish.

Also, when Tony Tobin was on he said his mum used to have butter but the kids weren't allowed it, only margarine. What an 'unselfish' mum she was eh? I can't believe he said that on telly like it was nothing.

I Love Sophie Grigson and her Weekends series was great, so I have been quite disappointed at the latest new series. It just seems odd and totally out of character for her to be in such modern surroundings. I loved to see her home and kitchen and think she should do another similar type of program. She's usually so natural and says if you don't like a particular ingredient just leave it out unlike Delia's rigid 7 turns of the pepper mill approach.

lol - My dad's the same. The food he's never tasted is unbelievable! Well - I stand corrected! Definitely not my childhood meals though.

Some of the stuff I've seen on there, yes, she did. Not like Sophie does though, I have to say. Smile My dad was very much of the 'plain food' brigade and if my mum had smothered everything with herbs & spices, he just wouldn't have eaten it. We're talking about somebody who felt that 'rice is for puddings only' here.......

Did you're mum make the food she does Mark? The closest I've come to a recipe my mum made was stew when Faith Brown was on - then Sophie (who I really like by the way) sprinkled chopped parsley all over the top of it! Mum's didn't do that when I was a kid Smile

I'd just like to point out that my criticism of the show isn't meant to be crticism of Sophie herself. I think she's a wonderful cook, her recipes are great and I watch absolutely everything she appears in. I just don't especially like the format of the new prog. I'm not sure that she comes across as bossy (well, not to me anyway) but it just seems as though it doesn't all 'run together' properly. I think it's probably quite a good idea that we're shown how to make the good old-fashioned things that our mum's used to make, I just feel this prog could present the ideas a little better, that's all.

As for her assistants, they probably all know what they're letting themselves in for by appearing with her - and let's face it, they're going to have an easier time than if it was GR presenting the prog! I'd imagine most of them are only too pleased to be able to pick up a few tips from a master (mistress?) cook like Sophie.

I hadn't heard that Marguerite Patten had died, and can't see it online anywhere, that saddens me, she was an icon, and very much loved and will be very much missed. This must have been in the last couple of months?

Hi Nick

Nebatism is when you get a job on the strength of a member of your family being "in the know" or "in the business". Like when you see so many actors following in their parents foot steps that were brought up knowing and mixing with all the "right" people.

This doesn't necessarily mean you wouldn't have the talent to do the job, but you may not have had the opportunity to have been selected to do the job.

When you said Aaron was her little lap dog little eddie, my first thought was, no this could well be his big break. Today, Sophie mentioned he could do his asparagus soup on his own programme. So I guess he's hoping that it will set him of on a celebrity carer.

Has any noticed that Margarite Pattern was there again. Perhaps it should have called Grigson and Pattern.

Still love Sophie though.

I must say that I agree with relishmamma, and I really love the Grigson series, and it's been one of the few that I've made a special effort to catch.
It's mainly Sophie that I like, and I don't think she comes across as bossy at all, must say though, that I'm still waiting for a pavlova meringue recipe to be aired, as I seem to remember reading this in the series info.
