Thread Starter: Vanessa3    Started: Fri 20 Aug 2004    Replies: 8

Hi! I live in Spain & I am about to have an abundance of figs! Can anyone tell me any good ways to preserve them or how to dry them, or any quick & simple recipes.
And can I freeze them?? Confused

Well, then you will know you have two harvests! So long as you reduce the fig weight by about two thirds they will stay in an airtight jar for a while. Dont add liquid as these are supposed to be sundried figs!!

Yes you can eat the skin.

I like both colours. Yes what works for one works for the other but my advice is not to mix the varieties.

Have fun in the sun...

Hola Wino! I know Mojacar, I had a holiday there some years ago, beautiful place. My partner & I live in Monovar. It is about 30 mins inland from Alicante, very pretty & peaceful - far enough away from the lager louts but close enough to the beach & airport!
Very hot here at the moment, although today is a touch cooler at 29 C !! Cheeky

Hey Vanessa, they live near Mojacar on Costa Almeria.

We are also in the stages of having a house built there and will be moving out in July 2005!

Where are you?

Thanks guys for all your replies. Wino, those recipes sound FANTASTIC! Where do your parents live in Spain?

Martino, that's great advice; I am actually about to sun-dry some tomatoes tomorrow, as I have lots of them too!
When I put the dried figs in jars, do they need any liquid with them??
I have green figs and also the purple ones, but I assume I can do the same for both varieties?? (First harvest in Spain - can you tell??!!)!

Brie, I have never eaten figs before either - appart from fig roll biscuits - they are quite sweet, but don't really have a distinctive flavour that I could describe; i'll keep eating them & let you know!!

Incidentally, can the skins be eaten??????
Cool

Hi!

I love figs and storage has certainly been a problem for me. Let me see if anything I know will help:
First, you really dont have to harvest them off the tree, just let them drop then pick them up and leave them on some paper in the sun. Keep them for two to three days in the fridge without touching each other or leave them where they are if it is good weather as they will just start to dry.
To sun dry figs think sundried tomatoes, if you have sun leave them out or in a lowest oven over night until about two thirds of the weight has gone. Then you can freeze them or store them in airtight jars.

Enjoy...

I adore figs. Sorry Vanessa3, can't help with the storage but my parents live in Spain and they serve them 3 ways:

- sliced in half and served with a dollop of creme fraiche
- sliced in half and baked, then topped with honey and yoghurt or cream
- sliced in half and baked, then topped with mozzarella or blue cheese (and a sprinkle of sugar).

Enjoy - I'm jealous!

yes..that recipie is on here..it looked wondeful in the tv programme..she did it with a tobacco sauce didn't she?

I have to say I have never had figs..do they resemble any other fruits in taste..or are they unique? Sorry if that is a daft question...just I have tried most things..but never had the oppurtunity to try figs...and for some reason they remind me of dates (don't know why as they look nothing like each other!) which I do not like, and so I imagine they taste the same! MammaChef

Tamasin Day Lewis did a wonderful fig tart, the recipe is in one of her books and I believe it is also on the UK Food recipe data base.

Lucky you Vanessa.
