Holiday food buys

Thread Starter: Wor Lass    Started: Sat 31 Jul 2004    Replies: 11

Hi I`m going on holiday to Italy (Amalfi coast) soon and intend bringing back some Italian foods. Apart from the obvious buys e.g. parmesan, olive oil, olives etc can anyone suggest some unusual but delicious things I could bring home.

Or rather the Ctrl and Alt with the $ to give € even

lol, confusing isn't it? I had a lovely website in my favourites that told you all of this sort of thing, but since the hardrive went down again and again I have nothing now........ Cry so I just try and remember or keep using different combinations till I find what I want.

If you haven't got a key with 'Alt Gr' written on it you can press the 'Ctrl' and 'Alt' key together when pressing the € and that will work too.

Thnx rustie - I'm a bit rubbish at the old computer thing - what's the gr key? I've got the alt and $ ones but can't see 'gr'. Am sure it's terribly obvious!Off to bed now; a hefty week in Rome behind me. Kindest regards, Rx

Regattsa is good enough for spoken if not correctly spelled!! Just back from 4 days in Rome; highly recommend last night's restaurant nr. the Trevi fountain; the Quirino. Unusual but typically Roman; super pasta and great fish. I always bring back porcini stock cubes and dried porcini mushroom slices. Don't buy at the airport tho' as you'll pay at least double. The 'proper' price for Parmesan (depending on quality) is C= (how else to do a Euro sign?) 17-26

Didn't think you were allowed to bring food back to this country. Could be wrong though but on my last trip abroad and on arriving at dear old Gatwick I saw a big sign saying "no way" to food brought back here. If I'm wrong I'll give you a huge shopping list. Ciao regattsa. Probably spelt that wrong too. Hee hee

PS its "ciao", in most italian words the "ch" is pronounced "K" so the way you've said it in italian would in fact be kow!!!
Never mind the important thing is how to ask for a bottle or wine - una bottiglia di vino per favore

Also limoncello, prosciutto crudo (parma ham), near Amalfi there is a lovely little town called Vietri sul Mare (its towards Salerno if my memory serves me well) where they sell lovely hand made ceramic plates, jugs etc its full of all that sort of stuff. Lots of people don't bother visiting Naples when they are down there but believe me its one of the most fascinating italian cities that I've ever been to. They have a wonderful archeological (sp?) museum, best in europe. But please do be careful with handbags, purses etc - I hate to put people off, but just don't tempt fate, leave everything in the safe in the hotel. (Mind you thats a good rule not just for Italy but everywhere..)

WXYZ. how about saffron powder for risotto, balsamic vinigar, wine, pecorino cheese, mushroom stock cubes, salami, pure alcohol for limoncello, any of the wonderful pickled veg sold in the supermarkets in jars, amaro (means bitter) - an after dinner digestive drink - Monte Negro is nice. Chocolate - try Novi extra fondente. Dried Chillis are great from Italy, if you can find them in the supermarket veg section zucchine flowers, whic are great filled with mozzarella & deep fried. Buon Vacanze
