Eating out in the Cotswolds

Thread Starter: HCB    Started: Thu 08 Jul 2004    Replies: 9

Me and my husband are already planning our Christmas and decided to go away this year renting a cottage in The Cotswolds. Can anyone give us some good ideas on places to eat and places that do a good Christmas Day dinner!

We'd probably usually go for a 'gastropub' type place or a fairly modern restaruant/inn but are open to any suggestions.

Thanks

Helen

Hi - we stayed at the Kings Arms at Stow on the Wold for three nights last year and ate there every night! It's definitely worth a visit - the food is gorgeous.

Hi Helen, my husband and I quite often visit the Three Ways House Hotel (home of the Pudding Club) which is in Mickleton, not far from Stow on the Wold/Bourton on Water. There's a choice of the "posh" restaurant type thing or a cozy "bar" type thing in front of an open fire. We've always been impressed with the food and it's not too expensive.

Originally from Horsforth in Leeds but since the age of 18 I've lived in France, Sunderland, Elvington (York), Cheltenham, Pontcanna (Cardiff), Birmingham, Henley-in-Arden and now live in Kelvinside (Glasgow).

I met my husband in Brighton but he is from Plymouth ... all very simple!

So, our copy of The Good Pub Guide has been well used.

Next year off to Spain ...

Yes I would like to know too as fellow yorkshire lass from Richmond. But after living in London and Notts moved back to the North East and now live in the culinary mecca known as Darlington (not)!

Old fave haunts include:

Good food at The Kings Head in Bledington

Home made chips at the bar at the Great Western Arms in Blockely (very important to a Yorkshire lass)

The best pies you will ever have at The Weighbridge in Nailsworth. This is more Gloucestershire than the Cotswolds but really worth a detour.

If you can't lay your hands on a Good Pub Guide then visit their site at www.goodguides.co.uk and type in where you will be staying as there are loads of great places around the area.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the tip Wino.

I've heard of the Wild Duck before and it may be a bit too far south for our Christmas dinner from where we're planning to stay but could certainly be a good stopping place if we go out anywhere.

Have you got any favourites or do any places in Central Cotswolds spring to mind?

Hi Georgie

We haven't booked anywhere yet but will probably stay quite central - Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton on Water, that sort of way so don't know if you can help?

Helen, grab a copy of The Good Pub Guide.

It has never failed us and we have been to many gorgeous gastropubs in the Cotswolds.

The Wild Duck at Ewen is a beautiful setting with gorgeous food

Hi Helen - whereabouts are you planning on staying? The Cotswolds cover a great area that spans many counties. I live in Oxfordshire and know of some places if you are interested.
