Juicer mad!

Thread Starter: Keith    Started: Sun 13 Jun 2004    Replies: 17

Having purchased my juicer/blender around 18 months ago, I used it this week for the first time!!! There's no stopping me now! So far I have just made carrot based juices: e.g. 2 carrots, 2 celery sticks & half a small lettuce, or a Little Gem. Yummy! Has anyone got any favourite juicer recipes, veg. or fruit based, that they'd like to share with me? Ta!

I bought an american one a while back now. Fantastic, juices everything whole. It cost £350 and worth every penny. 2 apples, 1 slice lemon and a piece of fresh ginger. Put them all into together . Wash first... It's a nice drink. Also, apple, carrot and ginger. Juice and drink straight away. I use mine everyday. Your eyes are sparkling white all the time.

Oh 'eck Livewire! That's all a bit disheartening, but I do also eat fresh fruit & drink sufficient water. I'll carry on with me juicer, maybe using the blender attachment more to produce smoothies. How's the nutritional value on them?

Mine is like the one Aliz mentions it was around a £100, but you can put the whole fruit in including skin. I just drop a whole apple or pear in. The only things you have to peel are oranges as the peel is too bitter. Its american and I think the model has been around for a few years. I bought it on the internet.

I remember a thread on here not very long ago, asking about just how much the juice contributed towards the "5 a day" I think reports said that the juice alone didn't do very much at all, but if the skins were included in the juicing process and the juice consumed straight away then the vitamins and minerals were useful. But still not as good as eating the whole fruit or veg.

In regards to buying a juicer, you get what you pay for. The ones with metal 'teeth' and 'sieve bit' give a better juice and last longer. although they are a bit more expensive. They often have a more powerful motor too. - Comes back to how often you want to use it etc...

Thanks for doing the research Livewire and Keith it was all the publicity about 5 a day which made me buy the juicer. I thought I could go a long way to 5 a day in one glass. The point about a surge in blood sugar makes sense. My friends thought I was joking when I told them that after a large glass of juice I felt a surge of energy like a high! I still use my juicer but I do eat more fresh fruit and drink lots of water.

I have been browsing around and as you are all worried about gaining weight by Juicing, I thought you may be interested in the undernoted info.
It is from Peter Thomson's Guide to Food Combining - All you need to know about the Hay Diet.

Extracting the juice from fruit or vegetables discards many of the nutrients, and bypasses the appetite control mechanisms. Fruit sugars in this form can produce surges in blood sugar in the same way as refined sugar.

It is far more healthy to drink water, and eat the whole fresh fruit or vegetable.

I purchased mine through a special offer in BBC Good Food mag., & so it cost, if I remember rightly, under £30, plus I didn't have to go out & about to look for one. (Lazy but lovely way to buy!) I'm sure you can find reasonably priced & good machines out there. Try the net. Do you have to wait 'til Christmas snoozy? Is your birthday between now & then or have you had it? If you have, well, the Queen has 2 birthdays, so why can't you? Have another one next month!!! ;-)

Interesting, & a little worrying: weight gain!! I don't need to put any more on. Not that I'm overweight, but I have got a little pot belly that I don't wish to add to!! :-( (Old age never comes alone!) I've not consumed more than a glass a day so far though, nowhere near a pint. I also like the inclusion of root ginger & will definitely give it a go. Thanx jax47's! Snoozy, it's so easy to make a glass of juice, & the results, so far, have been gorgeous. And it certainly works well toward my Five A Day. If nowt else, it makes me FEEL healthier!

I don't use exact amounts, usually start off with a couple of carrots, one stick of celery and an apple, then taste and add until I get what I like. Not too much celery as I feel it can overpower the other flavours
I like jax47's suggestion of adding a bit of root ginger.
I did read that you should only juice as much as you are going to use straight away.

emmm, i have often pondered on the idea of buying one of these, never got round to it yet... dont like the sound of putting on weight though, and i thought it was sposed to be a healthy option...

I have had my large juicer about 2 years. When I first got it I used it every morning . You don`t have to chop anything, so I drank a pint of juice every day and felt really healthy until I noticed I was piling on weight. Now I have cut down to small quantities a couple of times a week. My favourites are apple, spinach and celery with root ginger and pear and melon. Honeydew melon makes a lovely summer cool drink and mixes well with lots of other fruit

Oh, now....yes, perfect combination that Livewire. What, 2 each of carrots & celery sticks & a whole apple?

My favourite is carrot, celery and apple (preferably a Granny Smith or Cox's Pippin), A red apple doesn't have enough flavour.

Sometime use an orange and a little bit of lemon if I don't have any apples.
