Fishy Folk!

Thread Starter: Keith    Started: Sun 23 May 2004    Replies: 15

Any fisher men & women out there? As put in a recent posting of mine in another thread, can anyone tell me what it was I ate on my last night in Greece: it was simply written as 'houndstooth' on the menu. It was cut into steaks, lightly battered & deep fried, & very delicious. Very moist & succulent. But what sort of fish is it? What does it look like? Has it another name & is it available in the UK? Does anyone know anything about this fish please? Why oh why didn't I ask the taverna owner?!!! :-(

I have just watched a programme on Discovery and they were catching Sharks called Smooth Hounds, and as you can eat Sharks, it might be that!!!

Sorry, Keith, the OH has asked a couple of his Greek customers but no joy I'm afraid.

Have you tried a continental supermarket or a fishmongers?

Actually Keith, I completely forgot that my other half talks with a lot of Greek customers at work. I've asked him to enquire with them for you later today. I'll let you know if any of them come up with anything..

I'll laugh like a drain if it does turn out to be dogfish!!

Yikes! No, I was perfectly sober on that occasion!! Though there were many others when I wasn't!! The taverna was called Dimitri's, or Mr. Tasty as the ex-pats know it as! I perused my Greek cook books this afternoon, & the nearest I came to it was Fried Hound Shark. I would LOVE to go back Livewire, but maybe I ought to content myself with posting a thread about this on the www.symivisitor.com website. MarkV, that joke was so bad that I really laughed out loud! My kinda humour. Hmm! I wonder if it could be swordfish Nick. Anyway, many thanks for your input folks.

Keith, since I read your post I have been browsing on and off all day. The first thing I did was type Houndstooth in google and all that came up was different types of material with houndstooth patterns (including Chefs trousers).
Then I typed in Greek Food - I looked and looked at so many sites, but am afraid Houndstooth never appeared.
Then I thought, maybe Keith had too many refreshments with her meal and imagined the name on the menu - or perhaps Houndstooth was the name of the Taverna.
You really need to know the answer to this little mystery and I think the only way is a quick trip back to Greece and that little Taverna, but no alcohol this time.
Keep us posted.

Never mind, I am going to keep looking

Thinking of literal translations, it couldn't have been dogfish could it?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Sorry Smile

Not sure but I think you might be looking at Swordfish ???
I think it is from it's latin name, but I could be slightly veering off into a deep Channel !!! Ho Ho Ho
