Party food

Thread Starter: Gertieprickles    Started: Mon 10 May 2004    Replies: 12

Hello,

I'm having a 50th birthday party at home for my husband in July with around 40 guests attending.

A lot of them are planning to arrive early (4pm) and leave in the wee small hours so I am looking for ideas on what kind of food I could give them that will last the duration.

I don't want to spend all the time slaving over the cooker so am looking for things that can either be made earlier and re-heated or food that won't take long to prepare.

Many thanks

Radar

Evening rishmama, how is your tooth. Settled down i hope. You would like my stuffed eggs recipe. Here goes. I did this at catering college. It's an attractive starter.. To begin with put 8 eggs into cold water and bring to the boil add 4 peeled cloves of garlic to boiling water. after 6-7 min's remove garlc, drain well and pound in a pestle and mortar. After the eggs have cooked for 10 min's cool and take off the shell and cut them in half. Add 35-40 grs butter into a small bowl and beat untill smooth. Now take the yolks out of the eggs and mash and you must also sieve them, add the garlic puree and mix well untill very smooth. Season to taste. Put back into egg whites and decorate with an anchovy fillet wrapped around and olive. Garnish the platter with lettuce, parsley, halved tomatoes or anything that will make it look pretty. Now enjoy them, with your guests of course.

We had a party for my mum's 50th birthday last July and knew there would be a lot of meat lovers so did a barbecue. Because we had a gas barbecue we could keep it going most of the afternoon and evening. As well as the hot stuff (usual burgers, sausages, meat and veg kebabs, chicken etc) we also did some cold sliced meats, various salads, cheese and biscuits, and cheated with some bought desserts! (although did have a homemade pavlova, which always gets eaten!).

We have also catered for other parties in winter time where we did big bowls of various hot things such as mild and hot chilli, curry, fajitas with all the bits (sour cream, guacamole and salsa), casserole (for the people who don't like 'different' stuff!) - all served with other bits such as french bread, rice, jacket potatoes and salads, with a cheese board to follow. It always seems to go down well because people have what they like or a little bit of everything. However, given that it should be fairly warm when you have your party these types of food may not be favourable at 4pm in the afternoon.

If you don't want to do the catering yourself, perhaps you could do a hog roast? I am sure this would be appreciated by the meat eaters.

Porridge's Idea is great, cause the food doesn't become gross lokking as soon as it is put out.
What you could do is make Chili Dawgs (having the chili and dogs simmering throughout the day), with and chili on Jacket Potatoes, and have things like sour cream, jalepenos, greek yogurt , fired onions, cheese and salad

You could roast a few small chickens theyre great with just seasoning and chili flakes over them, done in one large tray. again sausages, a gammon is always popular with honey and mustard glaze. antipasti, (selection of italian meats) easily obtained from the deli counter. home made burgers.

I like the idea of the chilli and the indian dishes - I do a great curry ! ! !

Any ideas on what I can do for some of my guests who will only eat meat. They will not eat veg or fruit in any way shape or form, it has to be purely meat....

We are having a big party at the end of the month and we are planning to do a big pot of chilli with rice and french sticks, bowls of salad, cold meats eg beef, chicken and ham (will cook before hand slice and freeze), pasta with tuna and sweetcorn, tomatoe and mangetout salad and a salmon cooked and dressed. You can also do a cold rice salad. Puddings are going to be ones that can be made the day before and finished off that day.
We have got 60ish come but we did most of this for 120 three years back.
Hope it all goes well.

great idea, also indian dishes they all hold well and you can freeze in advance or after the event. July is difficult because not guaranteed hot weather so do some potatoe salads, and pasta salads all can be left for a day before, but refridgerated. sausages (good butchers ones) with mustard relish in unusual bread and as porridge already suggested cheeses. stay away from sarnies, too time consuming and dont taste great unless very fresh. Jamie olivers recipes for big food like fish or chicken and his salads ive all done for dinner parties small scale but easy and everyone loved it. Let us know how you get on. H

Porridge

why don't you do a huge pot of chilli or something like that so you can keep it warm on the stove and everybody can dig in as and when they arrive. You can also have french bread to serve with it and maybe some cheeses to serve with the french bread for later arrivals!
