Magpie Cafe, Whitby. Have you been?

Thread Starter: c27858    Started: Fri 09 Apr 2004    Replies: 6

Has anyone been to the Magpie Cafe in Whitby. The menu looked good and reasonably priced, and people were queueing to get in....even in the pouring rain. So we didn't visit, but it seemed very popular. Have you been and would you recommend it?

I havent been to the Magpie but would l love to go!

I have seen it on Rick Stiens Food Heros saying its the best Fish and Chip place in Britain.

If any body is an authority I sure Mr Stien comments should be trusted!!

Sooo

Just been to Whitby today for my Fathers birthday, he treated my Mum and myself to lunch at The Magpie..got there just before the queue started...had to share a table with a chap and his Mother in Law....but they were quite friendly, in an inobtrusive sort of way! and it was The Window Table! Had "small" cod n chips, mushy peas, lemon slices, bread n butter...excellent! £6.95 i think..I wasn't paying!
Having visited Whitby on numerous occassions, and seen the queues for this venue, thought it was just a run of the mill "coach party" fish n chips emporium!..how wrong I was.....a varied menu, and varied clientele....a ??Japanese party at the next table were devouring a variety of dishes..one man appeared to have a plate full of prawns/ oyster/ salmon/ mussels/ cod etc etc and salad, which i was informed by the afore mentioned chap was £17 worth of fodder, which he followed by a huge bread and butter pudding and custard.....Fraid I was stuffed after my meal, but next time .."i'm having what he had"!!!!!!! By the time we left, there was a huge queue outside....
After a walk round Whitby, and a climb up the steps to the Abbey, stopped off at the smoke house that 2 Fat Ladies purchased their kippers & smoked ham at, before calling into Sanders Yard Restaurant . ...at foot of steps, enter through shop...variety of cheeses/ teas / coffees/ spices/ pastas/etc etc.for sale.through another room selling original design clothes, into cafe area..different rooms, all very comfortable, outside to courtyard area..as it was sunny it was great to relax there..3 of us partook of peppermint tea, hot choc and elderflower cordial....couldn't squeeze in any food, but excellent menu..open all day, home made, locally sourced food.. seafood/ meat and vegetarian..Was sooooo tempted by the home made cakes/gateaux etc..still can't believe I didn't succumb!!...accom also in Dove Cottage/The Dolls House and B&B in trad beamed rooms or 1 with sleigh bed!!! £30-£35 pp...Smitten..moi?

Hi Guys, Paul Young here and I lived in Whitby exactly 10 years ago. I was remenissing only yesterday as it was one of the happiest times in my life so far. I was Head Chef at a restaurant very close to The Magpie called 'Alice Blossoms' sadly no longer a restaurant.
Whitby and nearby Staithes are my not so secret hideaways when things get a bit stressful. I also spent many an afternoon off in the Walrus and Carpenter Tearoom as they have real leaf tea and the Best Date and Walnut tea loaf I have ever had.

I lived in a flat looking over the Whale Bones and Abbey on West Cliffe and have to say they were the happiest times :-)

Living in London means I rarely get the chance to get there now but when I do I take my Mum as she loves it there too.

It is a must place to visit for traditional Yorkshire and Whitby treats like Whitby Lemon Buns. Yum!

love

TopChoc Paul xx
