Salad slicer

Thread Starter: Tof    Started: Sun 01 Feb 2004    Replies: 6

A few months ago, I saw an advert for a very useful salad / vegetable slicing gadget. The device did not require any battery or mains power and didn't look like a typical mandolin. It did help to produce many different shaped cuts of fruit and vegetables included serrated-edged tomatoes, which impressed me no end! Does anyone know what this device is called and where I can purchase one? Thanks!

Erridge on Saturday 07 February:
The Borner has a notch so you can fix the slicer to the edge of a bowl into which you can put salted or acidulated water. I use my Borner almost every day, very good for string beans and indispensable for make salads

If you have a look on the Nisbets.co.uk web site have a look for Mandolins. They have the Version made by Bron which is 'the' Mandolin to own if you are really serious about food prep. They are about £80, which although pricey could be a good investment. I had a plastic one and it tended to stain quite badly after a lot of use.

Just flicked through my lakeland catalogue and they sell one made by Zyliss. Has quite a few attachements and looks quite good. It costs £29.95 Ref 2922

Hope that helps

That is the same one as at the ideal home exhibition, however jmldirect on sky chanel 664 do a similar thing for about 7 pounds but you don't get the tomato flower thingy with it., anyway the jml one is just as good for a third of the price, but you will have to give them a call, not available on the website.

I saw a gadget similar to the one you described recently on the performance channel. It was made of white plastic and the presenter was selling it as though he was on a market stall. It looked fantastic and was about £20. Does this ring any bells.

Hi Tof, I bought one at the Ideal Home Exhibition in London several years ago and find it very effective and use it frequently. They're now on sale at Lakeland. The brand name is Borner (with an umlaut over the 'o').
Word of warning: they are razor sharp and must be handled with great care when washing and drying after use.

Hi Tof, I don't know if I'm on the right track here but I bought a mandolin type implement that came with various attachments to 'sculpture' fruit and veg from QVC a few years ago ... is this the sort of thing that you mean?
