Alternate use for kitchen gadgets

Thread Starter: Matt the Chef    Started: Sat 10 Jan 2004    Replies: 26

I was replying to a post about sausage makers and remembered that I use it for something completely different. I am sure there must be other gadgets which have alternate obscure uses.

I have always been a fan of making sushi but my attempts don't look that neat. I find it hard to get a uniform strip of rice. Buying a decent sushi press costs about £50 making it a bit too expensive.

I use my sausage maker with the thick nozzle to squeeze out a perfect line of rice which I can push flat with my fingers, fill and roll.

Works a treat and makes really tidy sushi,

Your turn!

Can't use the large Safeway casserole pot in the oven but it made a magnificent recepticle for doing an oil change on the car!!

Yes, Roseanne. But in the middle of the night I remembered it wasn't that show anyway, I think it was 2.4 children.

A bowl of water and an empty Fairy Liquid bottle are brilliant toys! Pan lids and wooden spoons are wonderful musical instruments too.

Hmm, Mary I think Tamasin would say "Rabbit and Prune Terrine".

No the gold fish bowl jelly wasn't a turny out one, it was a spoony out one LOL. Wonder if my daughter would like one for this year?

Rosanne?

I remember the thing about the Poodle in the microwave, I have a link to a Gerbil, or is it Hamster ( sorry can't remember ) in a microwave.
but I won't post it cos it may upset people.

And yes Sharne, I can remember sitting in the sink having a "bath" and having the washing up bowl in the garden to splash and paddle in, and the empty washing up liquid bottle to fill and squirt with. Oh those were the days, sigh................

Rabbits in the kitchen? Whatever would Nigella and Tamasin say?

I thought goldfish bowls were narrower at the top so I wonder how you turned the jelly out? Or did you serve it in the goldfish bowl?

I remember an episode of .... Oh bother I can't remember the name of the show, a large American lady married to the man who played Fred Flintsone. They had three children. It was an American sitcom. Anyway one day he put the goldfish into the blender and it got blended but after the show they showed you that it didn't really!

Sharne, I wish you hadn't reminded me about microwaves. I remember reading about a lady who washed her poodle and put it in the microwave to dry it off.

Sorry, I'm going now

My parents used the washing bowl from the sink to wash the grandchildren in when they where little. It has also improvised as a paddling pool.

I never heard of dishwasher salmon. In the movie uncle buck, John Candy washed socks in the microwave.

Oh yes I agree..............I used a roasting tin a a rabbit litter tray, filled it with sawdust, showed it to the rabbit, loverly, put the rabbit in it, great, sniff sniff, dig dig dig dig dig dig dig, sawdust all over the kitchen, you be amazed where it got to.......................

But can I go the other way round and say that one year I used an old goldfish bowl, you know the small round ones, to make a jelly in for my daughters' birthday party.

Did different layers of different coloured (flavoured) jelly with jelly fish sweets in it.

Hmmm magimixed goldfish..................no don't even think about it Smile

I use my large saucepan to put my goldfish in when i'm cleaning them out, does that count ?

Reverting to the dishwasher method of cooking salmon, I suppose if your salmon is tightly wrapped in foil it would be OK.

Martino, I don't have a pasta pot. I use my preserving pan for making pasta, stock and jams and chutneys.

If my hubby did that, Debbie ... oh I don't know what would happen!

Hubby tends to grab the kitchen knives when he needs screwdrivers in a hurry .... grrrh!!

Getting back to the thread. I use a pasta pot for making stock in. Does that count as a gadget being used for another purpose?

Thats like dogs walking on their hind legs, they dont do it very well and one wonders why the do it at all.

Leave the dishwasher for the dishes. Besides I dont have a dishwasher...

I have seen a salmon cooked in a dish washer on a tv show. I suppose if you had 5 or 6 whole salmon to cook, then it would be a good idea. Unless you have a large oven then options for cooking whole salmon are pretty limited.

I don't use salt or rinse aid in my dishwasher, just a three-in-one tablet, and if I ran the dishwasher with a good dose of vinegar a couple of times first I think that would get rid of most of the residue.

Then of course the salmon would have to be very tightly wrapped in foil..............No I have never done it and probably never will, I have seen a salmon cooked in a sink however.

Anyway, Mary have you tried doing a Google on "cook salmon in dishwasher" ??? you may be suprised just how many mentions there are. Smile

Has anyone actually cooked salmon in the dishwasher? What about all the chemicals in there, the dishwasher powder residue, the rinse aid and the salt? Oh it doesn't sound too good to me but I have heard that it's done.

hi everyone...a couple of silly-but-tried-and-true-alternate-uses (for those of you with small children)...baking spatulas make great teethers for babies and i always use a pizza cutter to cut up my kids' food...much easier! does this long heard of but never tried salmon in the dishwasher thing really turn out well?

Lets not forget the salmon cooking dishwasher.

And while I think of it I also use my pasta machine to make flat bread thanks to James Martin.

Another alternative use for a gadget was suggested by someone fairly recently but I can't remember who. It works a treat, I've been using it ever since. Use a potato ricer to squeeze out spinach after cooking. Brilliant.

Hi

In theory it should however use a strong one because you need to use a lot of pressure to squeeze the rice through.
