Success!

Hurrah! Have just produced my first bread maker loaf. I made a large basic white. It filled the house with warm welcoming smells while cooking. It looks fab but we can't eat it yet cos it's still very hot. Can't wait 'til tomorrow to make me sarnies for work with it! Also made my first Teisen Lap (Plate Cake) Friday. It's a traditional Welsh cake made with either buttermilk or sour cream. I chose the former & it is absolutely delicious. It also has mixed fruit in it. Took a slice each for mum & dad today, & mother pronounced it "very lovely". If mum praises something, then it MUST be good!!! I'd now like to try another old Welsh cake recipe for honey & ginger cake. My goodness, I shall be looking for the nearest Weightwatchers before long!!! :-)

Hi Mammachef! Yes, I have the new Panasonic SD 253. It really is excellent: not noisy when mixing the dough, easy to use & easy to clean, & produces fabulous bread. Thanks for the recipe PRR. And welcome jio, but if you put your message under a seperate posting in Recipies, you may get a better response.

After using a bread maker for a few years now I have tweaked the recipes, doubled amounts for larger loafs, left out milk when cooking on the timer and have run out of powdered milk and this recipe is the one which by trial and error I use the most.
If used on a long setting 4 hours on my Panasonic it comes out with a flakey crust and very light texture. If cooked on the short cut setting about 2 hrs it gives and much smoother, softer loaf.

Dried Yeast 6/7g sachet
Strong flour 3 cups
Sugar 3 tsp
Salt 1%C2%BDtsp
Butter 1%C2%BDtsp
Water 1%C2% BCcups

The cups and tsp measures were the ones I got with the machine.
I continue to experiment and have some failures but this one work s quite well with 'stores own' flour rather than the branded ones!

I tried Paul Hollywood's Mincemeat braed in the machine but... too much liquid I shall keep trying.

Hi Keith,

Well done on your bread. What Panasonic have you got? is it the one where the bits go in the lid and drop in automatically?

Mine is one of the first out and I really think they have progressed a very, very long way. Mine rarely turns out ok and so I end up making bread by hand as we do in the restaurant every day. But at home, I'd rather use a machine if I thought it was reliable. I have read all the post on the bread maker equipment threads but hearing your news, I thought I'd just ask what one you've got. After all Santas coming soon and since Jeni won't share her six pack, bow tied secretaries, I'm going for the bread maker instead, fingers crossed.

Sounds wonderful Keith! I have been hand making bread for a while here as I left my bread machine in UK. But I have been using ordinary plain flour as I couldn't find any strong bread flour. Some loaves have been quite good but mostly they are too dense. Today I found proper bread flour, yipee!

I am also baking cakes. I found cakes rather hit and miss in the Aga I had in England but now I have an electric oven and I have discovered a new passion for baking! I'm turning into a Domestic Goddess, heaven help Keith's waistline!!! (that's my Keith, not you, bread-baking Keith!) We will all be queueing for Weight Watchers at this rate though.
