TRIED AND TESTED

Thread Starter: Bambideer    Started: Sun 23 Nov 2003    Replies: 16

HI --In reply to a thread by Karen G --Yes I do try recipes from GFL/GFB. I love to experiment with food and ideas. This week I tried the Sicilian Sweet and Sour Rabbit. It was lovely, but I replaced the White wine vinegar with Cider Vinegar on my second attempt.Just a personal preference.I am personally open to all suggestions and love fiddling around with recipes. Anybody else tried anything???

No problems Marion! I didn't take offence at all and I SO agree with you about the written word as against the spoken word, and also you can't see people's expressions as they talk which can make a huge difference to what they mean by what they say!

If I could send you some avocados I would do so gladly. We can't even give enough away to stop some going to waste. Such a shame!

My Apologies Mary -I did not intend to mean you were smug --I just envied you with a glut of avocados. It is just that they would be very expensive here. Sometimes the witten word can be different to the spoken word.--i.e it does not reflect the tone intended.Sorry

I hadn't replied to this before because I never properly follow a recipe, I take the idea but then just use what I have in the cupboard/fridge at the time.

For instance, I had some carrots that needed using so I found Janet Brinkworth's carrot cake recipe. But I didn't have any rasins so used dried apricots, but I soaked them in some Malibu first.

Also the recipe has no topping, and I didn't have any cream cheese which is the norm, so I made some lemon butter cream.

So I ended up with something completely different but scrummy all the same.

(Jill named it my CAM cake, as in carrot, apricot and Malibu)

Marion, I wasn't meaning to be smug about my avocados. I was just responding to your question about what we had all tried cooking from the site and the show.

Karen G, I buy so many things from the Internet. It's wonderful!

Not at all - I never thought of buying stuff like that on-line! Daughter is obviously feeling better judging from the amount of food she's packing into herself - every time I turn my back it's another cheese or chicken sandwich! Thank you all for your concern.

Hi Karen,

You can buy galangal online from either of the following websites:

www.thespiceshoponline.com
www.seasonedpioneers.co.uk

and you can also get shrimp paste from the Spice Shop Onlineas well.

Hope you don't mind me mentioning this.

Thanks for replying I hope all is well now with your daughter -A little TLC never goes astray.Funny how they all gravitate to home when they are off form!!.For your beef recipe try ginger instead of Galangal ---maybe try an online supplier for the shrimp paste.,or better still e-mail your local paper .Perhaps a local supplier might pop up.Tell us how it turns out.

Hi Marion - I've just found this thread -you fooled me by moving!
I would love to try more of the recipes on GFL/GFB but before the last bairn moved out ( at one time there were 4 ) I had finicky appetites to cater for, and working shifts (both of us work shifts and different ones as well ).
Currently, we have one returned to convalesce after a gall bladder operation, who is pseudo vegetarian i.e. won't eat beef/pork/fish but doesn't eat many vegetables! The menu this week has been macaroni cheese, omelette, and potato & leek soup! All made properly, but I would love to make something like a rendang ( holidayed in Malaysia last month - what wonderful food!!) but getting things like shrimp paste and galan galal (hope I've spelt that right!) is nigh on impossible up here!
Hopefully when she leaves after the weekend, I can try the spiced beef recipe I found in our local paper last week!

thanks Marion,

Obviously you are not going this year or you would have a said. If I'm wrong here, let me know, it would be great to bump into people from here.

Otherwise, thanks I've been before, I know I will enjoy. Smile

Hi Marion. I did post a reply to this but it got lost! Sorry.

I have made Daniel Green's Avocado soup with poached salmon and Vincent Cheung's steamed fish stuffed with minced prawns. Both were great. I have also made James Martin's flat breads but I'm not sure if the recipe is on the site. They are easy and great for parties.

I did a smoked fish recipe but I can't remember who cooked it. I wouldn't do it again, I have to say it was horrible! But it was probably just me doing it wrong.

The 'My Recipe Box' section of this website contains quite a few recipes just waiting to be tried. Unfortunately, now that I can't watch the show I have to rely on the website and thank goodness it's here!!!
