Comfort Food

Thread Starter: Sonia 2611    Started: Tue 30 Sep 2003    Replies: 47

Have come to the conclusion that most peoples (at least talking to my friends) comfort food contains beans!! My favourite is 'pasta e fagioli' (pasta with beans) and also sausages and beans. Friends favourites range from Boston Baked beans, stews with beans and beans on toast. Even in the summer my favourite is canellini bean and tuna salad or those big fat greek beans in a tomato sauce. How about doing a show just on comfort foods? Let's not even talk about puddings!!! The list is endless!! What are other peoples comfort foods?

Comfort food if I am down or having a bad day has to be a bag of Salt and Vinager crisps and a couple of cheese triangles using the crisps to eat the cheese either that or tea and cream biscults.

Sweet doesn't do it for most women - not as comfort food anyway! Chocolate is in a totally different 'section' not for me though - I reckon I'm one of the few that chocolate does nothing for! Comfort food for me is a bacon shank cooked for me by my Mum and eaten just cooked!!! Mmmmmm! Hug

Does anyone have a sweet comfort food? maybe im sexist, but i thought all you ladies in particular liked a huge chocolate cheesecake or something. I'm male and admit that sweet does it for me everytime! chocolate pudding, crumble and custard. Maybe im missing the point?

Rag puddings are made of suet pastry, rolled out into a rectangle. Then you put either beef mince and onion in the middle,or beef skirt and onion.Roll the pastry over making sure you do the small ends first.Wrap them in any old rags ie.cut up white pillowcases, and boil for min.2 hrs.Longer doesn't matter,as long as you don't let the pan boil dry.Oh I forgot, once you've wrapped them, then they have to be tied with string or strips of your pillowcas, so they don't burst open. They are delish!!

Good quality sausages....yum. I love Toad in the Whole as it reminds me of being a kid and you can't beat bangers and mash with onion gravy.

When I lived in England it was any roast meal, but it had to contain cauliflower cheese, second choice would have been a huge bowl of mash. Now living in Italy I think it has to be home made lasange or Carbonara.

I was considering MammaChef's comment about comfort food being associated with warming winter food and I was reminded of my childhood association of fizzy lemonade as the cure for social unease. I don't mean lovely fresh lemonade; I mean the chemical colourless stuff. Sometimes when taken out by the family to meet dozens of adults I didn't know and who didn't want to talk to me, I'd feel very uncomfortable and mentally 'dirty'. So I'd think of swigging lemonade and it seemed to be a great purifier. I'm not quit sure what this says about the state of my mind.

Anatomy of a cooker!!!
Put the flags out!!
Now Wednesday and the man actually came first thing this morning! So its going to be oven baked EVERYTHING even lettuce leaves!! with a suitably fattening topping- like creamy Brie mash!!

Lettuce doesn't have the same appeal does it!! Thanks for the recipe. It sounds absolutely gorgeous! I want my oven back NOW.. Its bust... We waited in all last Thurs and the man came and said it was one of three probs none of which he had on his van. Typical.. So he would be back next Wed.. But I need it now now now.. We're so sick of things done on the hob!! You dont miss what you have atill it's gone...

Sorry Georgie, Lorraine and Jennifer,

I've been so busy at work but will go right now to the recipie section and post CREAMY BRIE MASH.

By the way, have you all noticed that all of us, including me, think of comfort food as heavy, warming foods. Does nobody need to be comforted in the summer? ha ha
