The Bay Tree in Stillington

Thread Starter: The Irish man in Yorkshire    Started: Sun 22 Oct 2006    Replies: 3

At last A restauarant in Yorkshire that takes food and its customers seriously. From the ambience to the customers , rarely have I enjoyed myself so much. The menu is unpretensious offering a la carte and pub grub and the food is bordering on sublime..All dishes are served in large wide rimmed plates or bowls ,the coolest cutlery and wine glasses that make you feel you are something special.

I started with a mussels soup which is encased in a puff pastry which you have to break through to get to the wonderful soup, ample mussels and a creamy soup make for a wonderful starter. My wife opted for smoked salmon which was seriosly smokey and did,nt taste anything like the awful stuff we normally buy.
For mains I chose the cassoulet which is apparently the chefs signature dish (Yeah he,s french) belly of pork, confit of duck, french sausage and haricot beans , wow wow wow Rarely does food leave me speechless..Im usually an outspoken loud Irishman This dish silenced me It was wonderful

My wife had the monkfish and lobster and usually at the stage of main course when she see's me happy she decides to tell me the bedroom needs re-decorating or we ned a new kitchen!!! No she was quiet She loved it..

Desserts were creme brule and cheesecake espresso coffes and Sambucas What an evening What a date (Yeah I know its my wife)What an experience.. I have been back numerous times and this places never lets me down Two words of advice to anyone reading this VISIT HERE

Following your recommendations we had lunch there yesterday. A perfect sunny day so we sat in the lovely walled garden. I had the best gammon steak I have ever tasted. It comes with a warm honey and mustard dressing with a duck egg and fresh pineapple and a bowl of wonderful chunky chips. Hubby had lamb shank which he pronounced `very good`. We shared a bowl of sticky toffee pudding - fantastic!
The Bay Tree is on the B1363 north of York. I absolutely recommend this restaurant. In these uncertain financial times we don`t want to lose this one. I want to go back soon!

We went the other day as we had the Tuesday off after Bank Holiday. We had the 'early bird' menu 2 courses for £9.95. A wonderful potato and broccolli soup with fantasic hunks of ciabatta. Then a steak pie (with a twist) creamy mashed potato on the top which my husband said was divine. I had Chicken, Parma Ham in a mushroom sauce. Which was STUNNING - a Nidderdale chicken breast wrapped in gorgeous parma ham with a rich sauce which contained a medally of mushrooms. We were so full (3 courses were £12.??) there was no room for desert from the 'Naughty Board'.

We're going back there tomorrow as it was top quality locally sourced food which with a drink or two cost us £25.00!!! Portions weren't scrimped TOTALLY YORKSHIRE portions, and we were so spoilt for choice it was hard to make a decision on what we wanted. So we've made a decision that we'll return time and time again and work our way through the menu!!!

The place is cozy and friendly, decorated really nicely and the tables set out with lovely blue water glasses, decent serviettes (not small and thin) which made you feel you were in somewhere really special but without breaking the bank.

I TOTALLY RECOMMEND THE BAY TREE!! Big Grin

Hi! I'm going to try that one myself...sounds great!! It's good to get some tips for yorkshire, even though I've lived here all my life its still good to swap notes! If you love Lobster, are reaaly into game and meats, you should try the Crown Inn at Roecliffe just outside Boroughbridge. Luckily its actually my local but the food is absolutely fantastic - really extensive menu and all cooked to perfection. I've never had such tender meat, just falls apart! The venison is to die for, and the sea food is really excellent as well. Well worth a visit.
