Hi everyone,

I've only just found this site and have enjoyed reading about all the fun everyone is having with their slow cookers! I am working my way through my slow cooker recipe booklet that came with it but thought I would look on the internet for any further ideas. My oriental honeyed pork is in now, smelling good, had a sneaky taste of the sauce, just checking for seasoning! I think it should be alright, I think I'll do it with rice. I'm definitely gonna give the whole chicken roasting thing ago, I think if that can be cooking in there while the roasts and yorkies are in the oven it can only make life easier and a guaranteed perfectly cooked chicken everytime and a great stock for the homemade gravy, mmmm! Wink

Last post about this - sorry everyone

The text should be black on white, that's how it looks for most people. I'm not daft enough to think that grey text on black is a good idea :-)

There is obviously an error somewhere (which I think I've just worked out and am trying to fix now), that is stopping the background from showing for some people, thus making the text hard to read.

thanks

Hi David - there is nothing wrong with the text coming down on the net. It's just that you have chosen grey on black and the readability is poor.
I am on 7 but that isn't the problem!
If I highlight the sentence that is the only way I can read it. Have you asked others for feedback on readability? Thanks M.
Do you have a contact box on the site because I can't come on and hijack this thread again - it's not fair. Sorry to others about this.

Hi MaggieW, which version? I've tested on 6, 7 and 8 and can't seem to reproduce it!

If you push Help > About Internet Explorer it'll tell you an exact version in there.

Sorry for hijacking this thread!!

Thanks!

Oooo.

Also, I know the water-bath thing was strange, but, really, if anyone has an idea if this would be viable or not please chime in!

Aaand, does anyone have (or have a cook book with) a recipe for mussels done in the slow cooker?

Hi David,

Super quick! Thanks for the link, I actually saw it earlier whilst browsing what the net had to offer and thought it was the most promising of some of the sites I'd seen (not just saying that).

I'm attempting beef in beer tomorrow. My other half is away DJing tonight so I'll pretend to be domestic goddess and hope that it is as impossible to ruin food in a slow cooker as everyone seems to think.

Just about to join your site now. Thanks again.

PS Your site is looking fine on the Mac I'm using.

eh?? there's obviously a browser bug I've not seen!

what are you using to view it? internet explorer? firefox?? what version?

sorry about that!

Hi David - your site looks very promising, but unfortunately, it's impossible to read grey print on a black background!!!

Hi Steph&Jay,

Sorry for the super quick reply, but I was online just as you posted your message!!

If you look on a website I stuck together - [link] The Slow Cooker Club, there's a great (if I may say so myself ;-)) chili recipe on there, as well as a lamb curry recipe that can be easily tweaked to use chicken instead, or even turned into a veggie curry.

Let me know what you think, or even get involved and submit a recipe or two if you feel like it! :-)

Thanks
David

Hi All,

Absolutely loved reading through this thread. My lovely man, Jay, is a complete foodie and we've just got a slow cooker. Some of the recipes look awesome! Got a couple of queries. Does anyone have any good chicken curry, bolognese (without jarred sauce), mild chilli con carne recipes? Also any good juicy veggie recipes?

Also, odd query, and if we try it and it works, I will definitely share, but is anyone familiar with Heston Blumenthal's technique of cooking meat vac-packed in a water bath? We were wondering if we'd be able to use a slow cooker as just that. We've got a feeling it would work, but obviously we don't have a vac-packer, but I have faith in cling-film, and lots of it!

Hope you are all well and enjoying your slow cookers!

Hi All,

I've been reading this thread for a while now, and have cooked loads of the recipes to great success!!

I've just started a website to collate all the recipes I've cooked, as well as allowing other people to upload them, and comment and vote on them. It'd be great if I could get you guys involved in helping me make it better! If you have a favourite recipe you'd like to see on there, then please feel free to upload it.

There aren't loads of recipes on there yet, but I'm working on it as I have a few weeks of time on my hands to do so :-)

If you have any ideas, suggestions etc then I'd love to hear them.

Thanks
Dave

I've just joined this forum because I've had a slow cooker for nearly two years and I've never used it!

A friend suggested I get one because he couldn't live without his and it meant that his tea was ready as soon as he walked through the door. I looked at the benefits of having a slow cooker and it seemed like a good idea so I put one on the wedding list!

When I looked through at the recipes that came with it they all suggested cooking everything first in a pan. Apart from creating extra washing up this also seems to defeat the object of a slow cooker to me! Like MichaelT35626 says a couple of posts back,

'I thought the point of a slow cooker is you put everything in 1 pot at the same time turn it on and bobs your uncle X amount of hours its done.'

I would like to have a go at using it before deciding whether or not to keep it. We only have a small kitchen and the slow cooker takes up valuable space that could be used for other stuff, especially as we are expecting our first baby in a few months time.

I would be grateful for any help in getting started with a slow cooker so I can give it a 'fair trial' before making a decision about keeping it. I don't want to have to cook everything first so workarounds for that would be good.

i have to say i think a baked potato will explode in a slow cooker but its worth a shot.

in response to stuE, i use supermarket meat and it is just as good. it makes these cheaper cuts taste great.
butcher meat probably is better but i have had no probs so far.
and yes you can freeze it and it will be just as good.

Has anyone cooked a shoulder of pork in the slow cooker?

Freezing slow cooker recipes is just like freezing any other casserole recipe and the same rules apply. Cook the recipe for slightly less than you would to complete the dish. This allows you reheating time. Making extra and freezing is one of the bonuses of slow cooker cooking. Smile

I intend to get one of these slow cookers. I just need to know as I'm cooking for one here. If I make a load of stew, is it ok to freeze the rest in bags? I just want to make lots and save some for later.

I read an earlier post that supermarket meat should be avoided and to use a local butcher. Unfortunately all the local butchers near me have closed down by the competition from the supermarkets, it really is a shame.

Has anyone tried doing baked potatoes? If you can roast chickens without liquid can you do baked spuds with that crispy skin you can't get in a micowave>

Not sure about porridge but here's one I tried the other day. I bought four ox cheeks from Waitrose (Forgotten Cuts Range). I then browned these off in a frying pan, chopped and browned three onions and then put these into the slow cooker (mine's a 6.5 ltr one) together with half a chopped swede, and three carrots, some garlic and two tins of chopped tomatoes. I then filled the cooker up to 3/4 full and I left all of that on low for 7 hours then removed the ox cheeks and allowed them to cool a little. When they were cool enough to handle I shredded the meat with two forks and returned it to the cooker. It was one of the nicest savoury soups we had had in ages. It makes loads and I've frozen in it two portion sizes. I give several of these to my father in law who lives on his own and can't cook! The taste is not dissimilar to oxtail. Incidentally, the reasons you brown meat and vegetables off in a frying pan is to add depth of colour and flavour (caramelisation) and the cell walls of the vegetables break down better than braising which makes the end product easier to digest. Happy cooking Smile
