Out of a population of 100,000, Bedford has 14,000 residents of Italian decent. In the early 50s a local brick manufacturer facing a post-war labour shortage - recruited almost 8,000 workers from the villages of southern Italy. What was at first a temporary arrangement, soon became permanent when the workers brought over their wives and families. The residents of Bedford continue to enjoy a better standard of pizza to this day.
Giuseppe
Thirty year old second generation Italian Brit, Giuseppe has lived in Bedford all of his life. He grew up eating only Italian food and speaking Italian at home. A trained chef, Giuseppe was proud to bring to New British Kitchen, lesser known Italian dishes, bagna cauda and saltimbocca.
