Polish in Hammersmith

With the expansion of the European Union in 2004, some 500,000 Polish arrived to the shores of Britain.

Gradually, signs for 'Polski Sklep' or Polish shop sprang up in high streets from Scotland to Southampton. It wasn't long before major supermarkets got in on the act. This year Polish foods make up Tesco's fastest growing specialist product range.

Long before the EU migration wave, about 20 years ago in Hammersmith one newsagent started advertising jobs and rooms in Polish. Local Poles call the window advertising "Sciana Placzu", or the Wailing Wall. Today, businesses in Hammersmith cater for all Polish tastes, with small supermarkets selling tinned stuffed cabbage and authentic restaurants such as Wodka leading the way in more high-end Polish cuisine.

Polish cuisine

Polish cuisine is the epitome of sensible cold-climate cooking. The winters are especially severe, so root vegetables, cabbages, fresh and dried mushrooms, game and heavy grain dishes are common. However this is not at the expense of lively flavours like dill, horseradish and poppy seeds. Find out more.
