In the 1920s after Cyprus became a British Colony many Greek Cypriots took the opportunity to make a more prosperous life in the new mother country. The first communities settled in central London opening cafes and restaurants—Greek Street in Soho is a reminder of those times. Thanks to the Greeks Soho lost its seedy image, but rents rose and many Greek businesses had to migrate further out towards Palmers Green. In the 1970s there was another major influx of Greek Cypriots to London, and they settled with their families in North London. Today the largest populations of Greek people live between Wood Green, Enfield Town and Palmers Green.
