What is sustainable fish?

Sustainable fish needs to be from well-managed stocks and caught using methods that minimise impact on the marine environment. Sustainable fishing also takes into account the fishing methods, health of stock, rate of exploitation, and management of the fishery. The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has a Sustainable Seafood Directory, which lists UK-based fish suppliers, restaurants and businesses that make sustainable sourcing of seafood a prime objective of their business.

The MSC eco-label

Set up in 1997 to find a solution to the problem of over-fishing, the Marine Stewardship Council has created an environmental standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. Their label is only given to fisheries that have passed an independent assessment of the fish stock levels, the impact the fishing has on the marine environment and the management system for the fishery. Look out for their logo on hundreds of fish and seafood products. For more information, visit the MSC website
