Method
1. Put the bacon and vegetables in a large saucepan and add the stock. Bring to the boil, turn down the heat and simmer for 2 hours.2. Serve in bowls, each topped with a slice of French bread scattered liberally with grated cheese.

Lovely soup, though better to use half the advised quantity of bacon and half the cabbage, otherwise more like a thick stew.
