The pub is full of history with old photos of the local community. The pub offers four local real ales behind the bar and soft drinks from the region such as Fentiman's and Thorncroft. The menu is where the really special attention is. Chef Rhian sources all local ingredients from small artisan produces and works closely with them to create a daily changing menu that uses the best of the seasonal and local produces that is available to him. He is able to create with very talented skills an interesting and diverse menu that caters for vegetarians and vegans whilst also maintaining a traditional British menu. The menus have a map on the back that list where the ingredients come from with the producer’s details and information. The menu also lists where key ingredients come from and all food is prepared and cooked in house from the bread to the mushy peas. Traditional Northumbrian dishes are also served with great detailed attention paid to researching classic old and forgotten recipes. The serious about food will delight in what is being done here and they have a reason to be very proud of their achievements. This place is a gem and demonstrates how food should be made in an environment where it is eaten and enjoyed.
