Being a serial renter of furnished flats means I've picked up an accessories addiction that's caused me to fly to NYC for a cushion. It's really quite bad.

  • On Dews Meadow Farm Shop:

Posted on 25th of August 2006

On behalf of Walter Bodmer: My family and I have been shopping with Dews Meadow Farm Shop pretty well since they opened. We are so lucky that they are just down the road from us. Jane and Andy and their staff are so friendly and helpful, and of course their produce is superb. It starts with their own pork products, including their wonderful sausages. But it does not end there. They always, for example, have first class beef steaks, lamb of any description and chicken. It is all local produce , and supplemented with excellent jams , sauces , cheese and mushrooms. Only the pickled herrings from Orkney are not local , but they are very good.

  • On Ballard Butchers:

There are four butchers in Castle douglas of which Ballards is by far the best. Their meats are of top quality and from animals which are bred, raised and humanely slaugtered locally and so are all ways fresh and full of flavour. Additionally, they provide a wide choice of meat products. Beef olives, various curries and Chinese stir-fry etc. all ready to cook. A wide choice of sausages including Lorne, black and white puddings and some wonderful pies all cooked on their premisis from fresh ingrediants. The have an award winning pie which was adjudged the best among many others in a competition last year. They are the best pies that I have ever tasted, anywhere. I am a former Airline Exec. and have travelled and lived and worked abroad for many years and have eaten various foods in many countries. I have never had pies as good as these. They are made with thin crisp pastery and are chock full of fine minced meat and very tasty with just a hint of spices and closed on top with an onion and potato rosti, which crispens when cooked. Additionally, they also provide excellent cuts of venison, wonderful duck and geese, partridge and pheasant, to order. Also British reared and slaughtered veal and even bufallo steaks, as well as duck eggs and quails eggs. Their service is prompt and friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. Also, their prices are reasonable and very good value. Castle Douglas is known as "The Food Town" of Dumfries and Galloway, with all foods being of the hightest quality flavours in all the cafes, hotels and restraunts. This area is the best kept secret in Scotland and it is a great credit to Ballards that they lead the way in choice, price, taste and quality among such high standards generally.

It was the first farm to grow wild rocket in this country! It also sells a wide range of herbs and fruit including artichokes and rhubarb.

  • On Lubborn Cheese:

Their English Capricorn Goats Cheese- it has a creamy melt in the mouth almost runny texture with a subtle nutty flavour.

Their black cherry liquor - a fine liqueur that has a deep colour, a fine nose and just a little bite at the end.

  • On Bookers Vineyard:

Their Dark Harvest red wine- a real stunner of an English red. Good medium body, full of red berry fruit flavours and cedar wood giving a lovely complexity on the bouquet and palate.
