Recipe Story
I always thought I would be rich and famous - so now I'll just go for famous. My newphew recently awarded me 3 hats on the phone for this one. A traditional Malay South African recipe.

SixLevel of difficulty:
IntermediateIngredients
500g mutton or steak mince
1/4 cup vinegar
1/3rd cup Chutney (Mrs. Ball's original fruit chutney is nicest)
1/3rd cup raisins or sultanas)
1/3rd cup chopped dried apricots
1/3rd cup slivered almonds
Juice of 1 lemon
1 tsp brown sugar
7.5ml tumeric
15ml (1 Tbs) mild curry powder salt to taste
2 eggs
one thick slice white bread (take crusts off)
1 large onion chopped
1 - 1/2 cups milk
2 bay leaves
1 tsp crushed garlic
1/2 tsp grated ginger root
butter or oil for frying
Method
Heat oven to 180 degrees C
Soak bread in some milk .
Squeeze out and retain excess milk,and add to mince
Saute onions,garlic & ginger.
Braise mince till colour changes.
Remove from heat then add fried onion,garlic and ginger mixture,
1 egg lightly beaten with fork), lemon juice, salt, half the remaining milk, sultanas, apricots, sugar, almonds and chutney. tumeric and curry powder. Mix well.
Pour mixture into greased oven dish.
Beat together remaining egg and remaining milk and pour over meat mixture.
Press bay leaves on top of bobotie.
Bake at 180C until golden brown (+- 30mins)
Serve with yellow rice, green salad and chopped tomato and onion.
