Date and Walnut Loaf

Recipe Story
This recipe was given to me by my Mother around about 1955 and was reputed (by her) to be HM The late Queen Mother's favourite home baking recipe.
Servings:

EasyIngredients
200g Chopped Dates
1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
275ml Boiling Water
Cake
200g Soft Brown Sugar
75g Butter
1 Egg - beaten
1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
250g Plain Flour
1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
Half Teaspoon Salt
50g Chopped Walnuts
Topping
125g Brown Sugar
50g Butter
60ml Double cream
Method
1. Soak the Dates and Baking Powder in Boiling water.
2. Blend the cake ingredients
3. Mix in the soaked dates
4. Bake for 35 minutes at 150 C in a lined loaf tin. Turn out on a cooling wire
5. Mix the topping ingredients in a pan and simmer gently for 3 minutes
6. Spread on the cooled cake.
