Working at the Old Table Tea Rooms is a pleasure. Rachel and Mike are so friendly and happy people to work for, they make work fun and intresting. It is the first ever job that i have enjoyed going to. The Chocolate Fudge award winning cake is to die for, served warm with a choice of cream, ice cream or custard. Rachel and Mike put 100% hard work into every thing they do in The Old Stable Tea Rooms, from making drink, serving food and making Desserts and Jams. I Wish Rachel and Mike all the luck in the world, they deserve this award. x

Whats to be said about this tea rooms in hay on wye? well nothing all the other reviews have said it all.except youv got my vote, and win or lose ill always come back again and again
The following review appeared in Wye Local: It was a cold winters lunch time, my partner and I walked down Bear Street on our way to Hay-on-Wye’s best kept secret - The Old Stables Tea Rooms. On entering, it really was like stepping back in time, decorated with old memorabilia, from weighing scales to cake stands, from postcards to biscuit tins, but the main feature really was perfect for this nippy day - in the heart of the tea room was a open stone fireplace. It really was too much to take in all at once, so as my partner and I stood there admiring the decor we were politely greeted by Jo. Seated near the well stocked fire, just what my finger tips needed! Plenty of beverages were on offer along with freshly made sandwiches, homemade mains and a specials board which I was informed changed daily. I chose homemade red onion and brie quiche, and my partner chose locally homemade pork sausages and spring onion mash with caramelised red onion gravy, both dishes were from the specials board. My quiche was served with homemade coleslaw, new potatoes and plenty of salad garnish. My partners pork sausages came in a thick red wine and onion gravy, served with mash and veg. There was much oo-ing and ahing and trading of dishes, chef Mike Carnell, Chef on the Run, really had lived up to his famous reputation. The large range of homemade desserts was just irresistible, whilst we both tried to make our minds up, our concentration was steered to a neighbouring table, a lady was being served a giant toasted tea cake and we, like her did not know they literally meant giant, it was bigger than the plate! The whole of the tea room looked on with amusement. I opted for homemade scone with homemade jam and locally produced clotted cream, at a very reasonable price of only £1.75. My partner opted for the homemade, award winning chocolate fudge cake, the presentation would not have been out of place at the Savoy and it tasted as good as it looked. When speaking to proprietors Mike and Rachel they told me ‘We want to keep it as a tea room but a tea room with a difference. Serving quality homemade food at reasonable prices’. They really do make a good team, not only as husband and wife but also Mike being a superb chef and Rachel priding herself on the presentation of every dish that is served. They really are a recipe for success.
Few things are excellent but the food and the service here are.
whats a whimberry? I now know after my visit to the old stables tea rooms, tiny little purple berries that are picked on the hills around Hay-on-Wye and they taste out of this world.I had whimberry and apple pie with local clotted cream which I must reccomend to any one who pays them a visit. I WILL BE COMING BACK.
I had turkey leek and cider pie. partner had warmed goats cheese on ciabatta with raspberry dressing fantastic . followed by warmed choc fudge cake with clotted cream and lemon cheese cake. out of this world. the coffee was good to well done
what can we say great food great service great tea rooms. the old stables are already our local food heros
The old stables tea rooms is a special place because all the dishes and desserts on the menu are all made by the couple who run it. You are always greeted with good morning or good afternoon when you enter. Its so nice to see good old fashioned values in this modern world. Well done.
great little tearooms mike and rachel have worked very hard to get the good name that this tea rooms has for its food and cakes they were asked to become members of the tea guild within 6months of opening i would urge every one to vote for this couple as they realy do deserve to be our local food heros for 2007
Working here.. I couldn't wish for a better place to work, no stress in the kitchen, all the staff get along brilliantly as well as the delicious food. If I had to recommend any foods from the tea rooms I would be here all night so I'll just keep it short and sweet (the coffee and walnut cake) once you have tried this you will understand why it is award winning! and as for the other cakes and jams........I'll leave them down to your imagination. I'm not just saying this because I work there, it is true, the homemade cakes are the best cakes around by far ... if you don't believe me then check them out for yourselves, I can assure you once you have been once you will be coming back for more. This place really does deserve to be up for the award because Rachel and Mike work hard to make this place as warm and as welcoming as it is. it is an honour to work here, I love going to work and i couldn't ask for any better bosses!!!!!
Well what can i say? Ever since this place opened last year I have not gone anywhere else. With the great homemade cakes (may I recommend the AWARD WINNING coffee and walnut cake), the AWARD WINNING jams, and mouthwatering meals, you really cannot ask for much more from this cosy little setting. Even the presentation of the meals and desserts will be to your satisfaction. If you do do not believe me check out the place for yourself I can assure you it will not be a wasted journey, even if you never go to Hay-on-Wye this place will make you want to go back for more.......the old stables tea rooms really are my local food hero 2007! good luck and all the best for the future x
The place is well good. The staff are very kind and helpful and it's the place to go - I definitely recommend it.
Such a great find in this busy book town. Fantastic food and good service - just how a proper tea rooms should be. Good luck with the local hero awards 2007.
It has the most casual friendly atmosphere imaginable. The food is REALLY homemade and served beautifully with such friendly service
Wonderful food in a relaxed and friendly environment. Best lasagne I have ever tasted and the most wonderful coffee and walnut cake! Great attention to detail to ensure the warmest of welcomes.
They say its Hay-on-Wye's best kept secret and it certainly is, when you have found it you have found Treasure. I opted for the homemade local welsh steak & ale pie with puff pastry & served with seasonal vegetables, which was melt in the mouth and for desserts which was difficult to choose from as the homemade dessert board had lots of choices, I decided on the award winning chocolate fudge cake served with local cltted cream which was to me heaven on a plate. I truly recommend the old stables tea-rooms as my food heroes and very much look forward to my next visit there.
Awesome place to eat with great home made dishes, friendly service, I highly recommend.
The quality of the warm welcome is matched by the excellent quality of the service and food - well done to them both
The Old Stables Tearooms is a lovely place to visit as it is filled with secrets and souvenirs from the past. There are lots of delicious homemade and award winning cakes to choose from and a selection of teas from all over the world! I regularly visit Hay on Wye, and on my last trip here I found this quaint but cosy tea rooms. The preserves that were displayed are all homemade and taste delicious!!!! The Apple & Whimberry pie is amazing and the whimberrys are from the surrounding hills. I'd definitely choose this as my local food hero!!!
I can see why this place has got all of their awards!!!! Their specials board has an amazing variety of exceptional dishes including goats cheese, homemade cottage pie & a salmon fillet. The menu alone is wonderful, and the cakes are to die for!!!!!
Super snacks & meals - a very friendly atmosphere & cakes to die for!
The high quality of the food is enhanced by the peaceful comfortable atmosphere. It's what all tea rooms should be, a really enjoyable place to eat.
Wonderful atmosphere, very helpful (have been known to make up drink and dishes not on the menu!) and their teacakes are to die for!

This wonderful tea room/restaurant run by Mike and Rachel Carnell serves very fresh local food cooked to perfection by Mike and served with a wonderful cheerfulness by Rachel. The Home Baked Ham sandwich, is served with wonderful fresh bread and a lovely salad garnish is only one of the wonderful dishes served. The very large list of home made Cakes and Desserts are just a delight. I truly believe they deserve to be listed as a REAL food Hero.
