Working at the Old Table Tea Rooms is a pleasure. Rachel and Mike are so friendly and happy people to work for, they make work fun and intresting. It is the first ever job that i have enjoyed going to. The Chocolate Fudge award winning cake is to die for, served warm with a choice of cream, ice cream or custard. Rachel and Mike put 100% hard work into every thing they do in The Old Stable Tea Rooms, from making drink, serving food and making Desserts and Jams. I Wish Rachel and Mike all the luck in the world, they deserve this award. x

The following review appeared in Wye Local: It was a cold winters lunch time, my partner and I walked down Bear Street on our way to Hay-on-Wye’s best kept secret - The Old Stables Tea Rooms. On entering, it really was like stepping back in time, decorated with old memorabilia, from weighing scales to cake stands, from postcards to biscuit tins, but the main feature really was perfect for this nippy day - in the heart of the tea room was a open stone fireplace. It really was too much to take in all at once, so as my partner and I stood there admiring the decor we were politely greeted by Jo. Seated near the well stocked fire, just what my finger tips needed! Plenty of beverages were on offer along with freshly made sandwiches, homemade mains and a specials board which I was informed changed daily. I chose homemade red onion and brie quiche, and my partner chose locally homemade pork sausages and spring onion mash with caramelised red onion gravy, both dishes were from the specials board. My quiche was served with homemade coleslaw, new potatoes and plenty of salad garnish. My partners pork sausages came in a thick red wine and onion gravy, served with mash and veg. There was much oo-ing and ahing and trading of dishes, chef Mike Carnell, Chef on the Run, really had lived up to his famous reputation. The large range of homemade desserts was just irresistible, whilst we both tried to make our minds up, our concentration was steered to a neighbouring table, a lady was being served a giant toasted tea cake and we, like her did not know they literally meant giant, it was bigger than the plate! The whole of the tea room looked on with amusement. I opted for homemade scone with homemade jam and locally produced clotted cream, at a very reasonable price of only £1.75. My partner opted for the homemade, award winning chocolate fudge cake, the presentation would not have been out of place at the Savoy and it tasted as good as it looked. When speaking to proprietors Mike and Rachel they told me ‘We want to keep it as a tea room but a tea room with a difference. Serving quality homemade food at reasonable prices’. They really do make a good team, not only as husband and wife but also Mike being a superb chef and Rachel priding herself on the presentation of every dish that is served. They really are a recipe for success.

Working here.. I couldn't wish for a better place to work, no stress in the kitchen, all the staff get along brilliantly as well as the delicious food. If I had to recommend any foods from the tea rooms I would be here all night so I'll just keep it short and sweet (the coffee and walnut cake) once you have tried this you will understand why it is award winning! and as for the other cakes and jams........I'll leave them down to your imagination. I'm not just saying this because I work there, it is true, the homemade cakes are the best cakes around by far ... if you don't believe me then check them out for yourselves, I can assure you once you have been once you will be coming back for more. This place really does deserve to be up for the award because Rachel and Mike work hard to make this place as warm and as welcoming as it is. it is an honour to work here, I love going to work and i couldn't ask for any better bosses!!!!!

Well what can i say? Ever since this place opened last year I have not gone anywhere else. With the great homemade cakes (may I recommend the AWARD WINNING coffee and walnut cake), the AWARD WINNING jams, and mouthwatering meals, you really cannot ask for much more from this cosy little setting. Even the presentation of the meals and desserts will be to your satisfaction. If you do do not believe me check out the place for yourself I can assure you it will not be a wasted journey, even if you never go to Hay-on-Wye this place will make you want to go back for more.......the old stables tea rooms really are my local food hero 2007! good luck and all the best for the future x

They say its Hay-on-Wye's best kept secret and it certainly is, when you have found it you have found Treasure. I opted for the homemade local welsh steak & ale pie with puff pastry & served with seasonal vegetables, which was melt in the mouth and for desserts which was difficult to choose from as the homemade dessert board had lots of choices, I decided on the award winning chocolate fudge cake served with local cltted cream which was to me heaven on a plate. I truly recommend the old stables tea-rooms as my food heroes and very much look forward to my next visit there.

The Home Baked Ham sandwich, is served with wonderful fresh bread and a lovely salad garnish is only one of the wonderful dishes served. The very large list of home made Cakes and Desserts are just a delight. I truly believe they deserve to be listed as a REAL food Hero.
