88 Degrees

2008 Regional Finalist
Café

Selling: Cheese / Dairy, Chocolate

88 Degrees - so called because of the perfect temperature for an espresso - not only sells their fabulous home-roasted coffee, artisan cheeses, bakery and patisserie but also makes award-winning handmade chocs – receiving Great Taste Awards for their Raspberry Champagne chocolates and also their 'Espresso Bongo’ (coffee and star anise) truffles. It's plain to see that the shop is keen on unusal yet well-matched flavours such as Raspberry and Wasabi. This small coffee shop and deli is fantastic. It is welcoming and serves excellent coffee, tea etc. The scrumptious cakes are all homemade and the dishes served throughout the day are different and made from the very best of ingredients. We never visit Kirriemuir without stopping here (ie most days) and never leave without some of the delightful chocolates handmade by Johanna.

88 Degrees is an outstanding small coffee shop which serves the best of healthy eating and homemade produce. Phil and Johanna are extremely welcoming and must be congratulated on their innovative approach to their different menues for light lunches. These are complimented by a variety of delicious cakes and chocolates. 88 Degrees is a great asset to Kirriemuir and the local area.

I first visited 88 degrees soon after it opened and was delighted to find a high-end (though reasonably priced) coffee shop in a town that had for far too long lacked one. The food here is refreshingly good, made, as it is, with the finest ingredients and care. I moved from Kirriemuir to Manhattan (quite a change...) a few months ago and am hoping Phil and Johanna will open an outlet here soon..! The cakes are all worth trying - especially the rich chocolate brownies. Also, 88 degrees is a great lunch spot, but come early to ensure you get a table.

88 degress is a haven for those seeking to tune out. The attention to detail really adds to the experience, yet the mood remains laid back. A must for every city, never mind town. Well worth a trip, even if distance is an object.

Always imaginative, amazing and delicious - 88 Degrees is worth a trip. The food is fabulous - much of it locally sourced or grown by the owners - and the selection for vegetarians and vegans is excellent. The coffee is amazing, the freshly squeezed fruit juice is super and the cakes are an absolute triumph! The atmosphere is always relaxed and the interior is stylish, comfortable and terribly cosmopolitan. Every town should have an 88 degrees!

88 Degrees is a complete experience : a consistently warm welcome, a culinary oasis of wonderful eclectic food, freshly prepared with quality ingredients, the BEST coffee in Britain (never mind Scotland!), the finest award winning hand made choclates and uniquely quirky surroundings make this a MUST for locals and visitors alike. Arguably National, not just Local Heroes. 88 Degrees is an all round winner - miss it at your peril. Your No.1 fans!

88 degrees is an exceptional, well -run, friendly cafe with the most wonderful food at very reasonable prices. To-die- for coffee, tea, divine salads , lunches, delicate soups, and superb chocolates, cakes and cheeses. There is nothing in this place which has not been carefully researched before it's presented to the customer. 88 deserves this award, and Johanna and Phil should be National heroes!

Every trip to 88 fills me with a sense of sheer delight and tickles the taste buds like no other! Take the greatest home grown and locally sourced food mixed to quirky perfection, spectacular house coffee served in mighty and magnificent cups, home made chocolates that justly deserve their Great Taste Award, cakes that would melt anyone’s heart and sublime service delivered with humility. For those of us lucky enough to be locals and old (or young) enough to remember, it’s like a trip into Mr Ben’s dressing room… Closed on a Monday and a Tuesday (sadly Johanna and Phil do need days off!) Not only menu changes but complete interiors too, it all adds to this truly unique place. For those who are not local it’s more than worth the journey to seek out this special little place. I believe it's come a long way since it’s "2 panini and toasted sandwich” inception and for that I congratulate a truly inspirational couple, Phil and Johanna whose passion and dedication give us something wonderful in 88 degrees. I must also welcome Emma to the 88 team who may not like tea but does share a love of great coffee…welcome! I will continue to take those from my world to this little slice of food heaven and wherever I am in the world…88 degrees coffee will go with me, get my vote and may even tempt me home!!!

Quite simply - Fabulous! The food is always to die for and there is always something different on the menu or in the chill cabinet each time you go in. To find a cafe of this standard in Kirriemuir is great. Well Done Phil and Johanna

The food is amazing, fresh & hugely exciting. The hand made chocolates are sublime. The shop itself is small, but perfectly formed and the owners, Joanna & Philip could not be more helpful if they tried. Nothing is too much trouble & their knowledge of their products & food in general is vast. An absolute must for all lovers of good food.

88 Degrees is the perfect place to spend an afternoon completely losing track of time, enjoying fantastic coffee, eating delicious food and discovering new music. It is fair to say that Phil and Johanna put more time and effort than most would ever consider into the food they serve and the products that go into it, growing their own vegetables, keeping their own hens for eggs and making all of their cakes, pate and fillings from scratch. The menu has something to suit everyone, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and the cafe itself has become a great asset to a small town.

This cafe has not only brightened up a sleepy town but Phil and Johanna's passion for the food they serve and the high quality of produce used has create a hive for the locals. Johanna's hand made chocolates have already won a gold prize in the great taste awards and are quite simply the mot amazing thing i have ever tasted. They serve freshly squeezed juice along with your freshly made to order wrap, deli board or cake (i recommend the carrot cake), and an every changing and evolving menu. I recommend that you visit Kirriemuir, you stop by 88 Degrees and watch the world go by in their relaxing and funky surroundings.
