View all reviews (22)Not only are the wild food nights an exciting way to experience beautifully cooked unusual food from the locality but the happy friendly atmosphere is repeated at the Woolmer Green farmers market where one can relax with the paper, coffee and best of all a delicious pigeon roll. MH.
I have been to a few of the wild food evenings and had great food and will continue to go for more. With Stuart preparing localy sourced wild ingredients it ensures the menu varies with the seasons, giving the menu has a different flavour each time you go. Well done.
This is sa marvellous approach to re-connecting the 'townies' with real food. And the results were TOTALLY delicious! Such an enjoyable and educational day out.
The whole experience is incredible. Food is superb, especially as it is all fresh and local; company is always good and the value is superb for such a wide range of dishes. Stuart and co. are such a friendly bunch and always have time to chat and swap ideas at the end of the evening.
Stuart's passion for cooking wild food is evident in everything he prepares. There are no short-cuts, just an eagerness to stick to real food cooked in traditional ways with local ingredients. So many people have been surprised and amazed as to how exciting wild food can be, from wild food nights, hog roasts, forraging days to Woolmer Green farmers market. He puts so much effort into food and listens eagerly to what his customers say. A true perfectionist and a really lovely man.
Local Tennis club used Stuart several times Hog Roast, Wild Food evening. Great food with no hassel.
Stuart is a salt of the earth guy who has an amazing passion for his environment. His knowledge, creativity and willingness to experiment means you get a great feed and a memorable night out. He deserves recognition for doing something so different and proving that living off our land is not only an option it is very tasty! I think his approach is very timely bearing in mind the price of food and our cultures over reliance on convenience. If more of us used our back gardens and hedgerows perhaps we can sustain ourselves without Tesco???! Good luck Stuart!
the country bumpkin what more can i say excellent i had a day out with stuart foraging with two of my frends we had sutch a greate day out that we dident whant it to end many thanks stuart for a memroble day...
we had a wonderful meal cooked by The Country Bumpkin at the Red Lion in Woolmer Green. All the ingredients (crayfish, rabbit, nettles etc.) were sourced locally and alot of these you could (with a bit of knowhow)catch or pick yourself from the countryside. The dishes were served as they became ready which meant that our meal took a long time (about 3 hours, i think). As with many people we are in the habit of eating quickly and leaving - it was a really pleasant change to relax and savour our meal and not rush or be rushed. We also felt that we had a huge amount of attention from all the Bumpkins and we left feeling we'd been thoroughly spoilt. There's no two ways about it - we'll be back
The Wild Food Nights that I've been to have been a friendly, relaxed evening all about trying delicious, local food. Previously, not a massive meat lover, I'm now a rabbit and pigeon convert! The several sample dishes of each course are a perfect way to maximise your taste-bud experience. Chef Stu, aka ‘The Country Bumpkin’ has a contagious passion for sourcing local food, giving the locals no excuse by organising the local Farmers Market, which from experience, is well worth a visit!
I, and some work colleagues, have now been to Stuart's Wild Food Nights twice, and will definitely be going again, and again. The chance to try some of the weird and wonderful dishes dreamed up by Stuart is something I look forward to each month, so much so that if the popularity grows any more within the office, we'll have to book the whole pub to ourselves. Also appreciated is the time taken by Stuart and his colleagues to go round after the meal, asking how everything was and any suggestions on improvements or foods for future events.
Have tried some lovely, and ver different food cooked by the Country bumpkin!
We have been to several wild food nights now and have got to know Stuart and his family. The food is always excellent and we get to try things you wouldn't normally cook. The Squirrel was particularly good! Nic & Vic, Knebworth
So far have had three wonderful evenings with delicious food excellently presented and cooked. Stuart and his staff create a truly lovely atmosphere and we really look forward to the next time we can go. It's a wonderful concept and Stuart and the team deserve every accolade.
Words cannot explain how much passion and pleasure this person get's from cooking wild food. He has opened alot of peoples eyes to how exciting wild food can be and I think that shows in everything he does, from his wild food nights, hog roasts, forraging days and woolmer green farmers market. He certainly goes the extra mile to please all of his customers and listens to every opinion be it negative or positive and strives to achieve the very best result! A true hero of the woolmer green village.
I visited Stuart's Wild Food Night for the first time last month and thoroughly enjoyed every morsel. It was lovely to taste rabbit again, and I'd never had sorrel soup before and it was delicious. Pidgeon pie was a first (and won't be a last I hope) and the elderflower icecream with elderflower fritter was unfortgettable. All in all a wonderful variety of wholesome, organic, wild food - will definitely be visiting Stuart again soon.
Stuart has opened up a whole new world in the food that he cooks - from bunny wabbit to goose and everything in between. An absolute feast and the way it is meant to be, wild, free and fresh, straight from the field. Lovely food and a lovely host!
A man with a long-standing genuine interest in his social, economical and environmental vicinity. Lovely, honest and innovative local food, well thought-out and extremely tasty! Not a bad chap either...
Wow - every month Stuart sends out super emails suggesting what wild food we can find -eg sorrel, pignuts, burdock. He really has opened the door to fresh, low Landrover miles, eco-friendly food. Every month he cooks up a superb four or five course meal of amazing food. Well done Stuart. Keep on cooking!
Passionate about the countryside and food, Stuart will forage and hunt the local area for wild food. He will then engage with everyone to spark there enjoyment of what is available on there doorstep by producing stunning dishes of wild food at local pubs and events. He has introduced many local people who would never had thought of eating rabbit, pigeon, nettles etc. the list goes on to return time again to his wild food nights and even to attend his foraging days to learn more. There is very few people around who still keep all the old country skills alive, so well worth contacting if you like a very informative day out in the countryside with excellent food as well.
Have tasted some excellent food cooked by The County Bumpkin.
The Country Bumpkin is an up and coming buisness, specialing in Wild Food! Stuart has a passion for anything outdoors, and works very very hard at what he does. He offers a range of things to do, such as the most delicious Hog Roasts, Foraging days, which have been a great sucess where he takes people out for the day, foraging, for wild food, with a cook up of everything caught at the end of the day. He runs his own Farmers Market, where he sells wonderful food, from rabbit burgers to pigeon baps! And runs his own wild food nights, which involve stuart cooking for 30-40 people all wild food! past meals have included, Nettle soup, Goose pate, Game soup, Rabit ravioli, Pheasant casserole, Venision pie, Bramble cheesecake, Elderflower fritter, Elderflower ice cream, Hazelnut meringue gateau, Sloe ice cream, all of which tastes so good! Stuart loves doing what he does, and works very hard to achieve the best.
