View all reviews (7)am lucky enough to have this place as my local chippy. the fish is always cooked to order & therefore hot. great tasting fish & chips & not greasy.
I have lived in South Shields all my life, and remember Colmans when it was called Trebon. Then, it was very much a greasy spoon sort of establishment, and not particularly popular with locals, being mainly frequented by holiday makers.I have to say,i still had this rather distorted image of the shop prior to my first visit in over 12 years the other week. What i saw blew me away, clean and inviting atmosphere, and this was just in the take-away section. The staff were extremely courteous, cheerful and efficient and to me appeared to take great pride in their establishment. I ordered cod and chips with a smattering of batter and i have to say they were top class, the best i have ever experienced,i am now spreading the "word" to friends and relations...go..enjoy..and vote for these guys..they deserve it!!
Colmans fish and Chips restaurant is a very special and unique eatery. The restaurant is very clean with white tiled walls on one side and black marbled wall on the other side. The tables are always nicely set with cutlery, condiments, serviettes and even a fresh flower. Tables seat either 2, 4 or more, and are well spaced. Despite the place being busy on our weekly visit, we never have to wait more than 5 minutes for our order to be placed in front of us. Service always comes with a smile, and pleasant piped music plays continuously in the background. Pensioners such as ourselves can order a special which is very reasonably priced at £5:99. For this price you get a pot of hot tea each, which is sufficient for 2 cups, plenty of thick chunky chips and a large filleted fish which is done to perfection. An alternative to tea is fresh orange juice which is made from fresh oranges while you watch. How can a fish and chip shop get any better than this? The carry out menu from next door is comprehensive, and cooked to order once you place your order on entry. We take different friends of ours whenever we get the chance, and never had one complaint yet. I cannot recommend this place highly enough, make sure to visit for an unbelievable gastronomic experience of a lifetime. Art & Laura Speck
having just visited Rick Steins fish and chip restaurant in Padstow,I was not expecting to be as impressed with Colmans in South Shields. HOWEVER! I need never travel to Cornwall again. This restaurant blew us away with superb fish, lovely chips(not a speck of grease anywhere) wonderful presentation and professional, knowledgable staff. We're on our 4th visit now to Colmans and Padstow is a distant memory.
