Victoria Bakery

Bakery / Patisserie

Selling: Bread / Bakery

Victoria Bakery is owned and run by James Freeman, the fifth generation of Master Bakers in North London. The business was started by his Great Great Grandfather, Robert Freeman in 1827 in nearby Highgate. The business philosophy is to provide "quality and service, second to none". They use time honoured traditional methods, such as overnight fermentation of their doughs and baking bread on the stone floor of their ovens to produce really crusty bread. The owners are keen to source all of their ingredients from local suppliers and producers in order to minimise food miles. They source their beef and pork for their pasties and sausage rolls from Drew at Hedges Farm (another nominated Local Hero) only 10 miles away. Their flour is milled at G R Wrights & Sons Ltd at Ponders End only a few miles away and the wheat comes from Horden on the Hill in Essex, so the food miles from farm to bakery is only 36.2 miles. They produce a wide range of traditional and contemporary bakery products including breads, sandwiches, cakes and pastries.

A local High Barnet institution, this small, friendly family-run bakery sees queues for its freshly baked bread and pastries. Traditional treats include scones, Chelsea buns and hot cross buns. Kids love the huge cheese straws and the sprinkle-covered iced doughnuts.
