View all reviews (44)Beautiful garden with views over the fields to the downs. Fantastic food, and really excellent value for money. Love the "outside kitchen" in the summer with amazing choice of ploughmans. It's an absolute MUST in the summer
Ab-Fab place, local food, friendly staff, pretty location, traditional pub with all the extras. Have just moved to the area and will definately make this a regular haunt. 10/10
I was very tempted to keep mum about this gem of a place which serves the most amazing locally produced food for fear of not being able to fight off the masses of food lovers to gain access again! Everybody deserves to eat here at least once, life is just too dam short not to. Took parents and in-laws for Sunday lunch today and they were completely bowled over, I managed starter, main and dessert so it will be lettuce leaves all week but heh 'what the hell' it was so worth it.
Found this place recently and have been back twice this week. An absolute oasis in a desert of so-so pubs. Very, very well run establishment. Quite obvious that there is a great deal of passion involved in supporting local food producers. Best local food I have experienced in a long time.
I was born & bred on a farm and really appreciate local produce, and this is the best. We had homemade Brawn, and shredded shoulder of venison, great use of great ingredients.
This is local food at it's very best. Nearly every course has some sort of local ingredient or influence, and all prepared with skill and imagination. 1st Class, all the way!!!
fantastic food ,friendly atmosphere a place to go back to time and again
THIS IS GOOD!!!! Try the loin of pork stuffed with Sussex blue cheese, or my wifes favourite; the monkfish kebab covered with warm garlic butter... 10/10
Another wonderful weekend at the Countryman. Although we don't live in shipley anymore we still consider ourselves locals. We even helped pick the Damsons off the various trees in the Garden yesterday. We picked about 20 kilos, which I understand will be used for making chutney for the winter. We were treated to roast Pork with damson Sauce for our efforts, and it was absolutely superb.
My husband is a big Glen Miller fan, and since he found out the landlord is too I can't keep him away. I don't mind though, the food is great, and even better knowing it's local.
I just love this place, always a pleasant busy, hustle & bustle atmosphere. I am retired now so I can spend time how I want, and this place is certainly top of my list. When meeting friends, I can't think of anywhere better. Top marks for food, beer & staff.
Just decided last minute to go out for a snack last night and went to the countryman for the first time. We were well impressed!! We were treated like old friends and although they were very busy still found time to explain where the food comes from. We both had chicken & bacon salad, fantastic.
Have dined here many times with friends and have always found the food and service to be first class. My wife and I come from N.E. Scotland and were raised on local produce. We moved South 6 years ago, and this is by far the best place we have found since moving. Real Food, Real People!!
Was recommended by a friend who is a frequent diner at the Countryman. Tried the restaurant last Wednesday with my wife and was so impressed we immediately booked again for Sunday lunch. We have now booked again for my birthday in September, but will probably be back several times before that. 10/10
Was introduced to this place by a friend of mine over a year ago, and now dine here on a regular basis with friends and business colleagues. I have never been disappointed and I am amazed at how such a busy place can constantly maintain such high standards. It is comforting to see so much local produce on the menu. Excellent food, Excellent Staff, Excellent Location.
I dined here with 3 girlfriends last Friday evening and we had 4 great maincourses and initially the service was excellent. For dessert we all ordered Raspberry and Caramel Tart which was very disappointing. No caramel, just dry savoury pastry with raspberries, coulis and whipped cream. When we questionned the lack of caramel, waitress said that most people did expect a thick layer of caramel. When we asked the 'chef', he said caramel was mixed in with the coulis! We paid the bill surprised that they were not receptive to feedback on the dessert. As we were leaving the waitress shouted silly cows! We couldn't believe our ears, ignorant & upsetting behaviour! We certainly won't be returning.
My husband and I have just moved to the area and we wanted a great pub to go and eat. We are pretty fussy, but why should we be, as going out to eat either for lunch or dinner should be a pleasurable and relaxing experience. We both had the Roast Beef, and for desert, the chocolate Brownie with clotted cream ice cream, it was amazing. Every mouthful was delight to eat and the dinner was piping hot, (hate my veg cold and meat hot. Told you we were fussy). It was also nice that they use local produce. Pretty pub set in the middle of nowhere, with excellent food and drink at a very reasonable price with friendly staff. Our ideal place to eat, drink and relax, 10 out of 10.
This is a must! Shouldn't share this fabulous secret with anyone, too many people may just discover it! Staff fab and food just beyond belief! 30/40/50 out of 10!!!!!!!!!!
Been swopping my excess lettuce for credits over the last few weeks, and went for a meal last night with my wife. What A fantastic bargain, had Fillet steak with everything!!!
I stumbled across The Countryman when my car broke down, out in the sticks. A very helpful (and attractive, I must say) guy called Jay rescued us from the pouring rain & took us in - Wow! Having smelt the food first & then seeing others dine, we decided to tuck in, AMAZING! We have never tasted REAL food like it! We ending staying for several hours with the owner, forgetting about the car & of course, by now being well over the limit. Luckly, Jay was kind enough to put me & Danielle up for the night. GREAT pub, GREAT food, GREAT locals!
Had Pigeon & Rabbit pie for the first time ever, and absolutely loved it. I am new to the area and never knew places like this still existed. I am definately a local food convert. Thanks countryman.
This place is an absolute gem, and has got to be one of the best kept secrets in Sussex. REAL Local food, superbly cooked, fantastic location, and genuine hospitality. This place is aready a winner for me.
Visited here on the 17th July to celebrate my Sister in Laws birthday. What a great choice. Excellent food, brilliant staff very friendly and attentive. Will definitely be going back
Grest place to eat, nice frendly staff and Landlord what a nice man he is or so he told me .
The locally-sourced food which is so well-cooked. The menu offers many attractive, unusual dishes. The staff are so pleasant too, and it is nice not to be rushed.

A wonderful eatery, and just gets better. Local produce is always a major feature on the menu. Always well presented, and good value

Having worked here now for 5 years, I wouldn't work anywhere else. I am always learning something new, and really appreciate the amount of effort that has to go into getting local produce from the farm to the restaurant. Fantastic.
Great food , great place , really nice people and the new outside kitchen ,WOW.
The country style food and atmosphere is pure bliss. From hearty countryman pies to fine vegetarian. I would cheerfully recommend this gastro style pub to others. Well worth the journey.
We have dined at the Countryman for many years and have found the food very imaginative and of constant good quality. Their menu changes according to the seasons which makes it very interesting.
We had Lunch at the Countryman on Sunday as we do at least once a month, and I am always amazed at how enthusiastic the owners still are about their produce after 20 years. I had the roast pork and was very happy to learn that it was from a farm only 6 miles away. Well done countryman!!
As a local Fisherman, I know the fish is fresh, because I have caught it. Alan will always look after his local suppliers, and like me many are regular diners.
Alan Vaughan goes out of his way to make sure that his clients have a pleasing and memorable visit to his Inn. He is happy to go out of his way to ensure quality and service are delivered as an expected experience for Countryman Inn-goers.
My wife & I have been regular diners at the Countryman for several years now, and we have never been disappointed. We started coming here because this was the only restaurant locally that served a good traditional oxtail stew. Very pleasant surroundings, lovely location and excellent staff. thouroughly recomended.
Consistently excellent food, lovely helpful staff. great ambience. I highly recommend it for any occasion.
I HAVE EATEN AT THE COUNTRYMAN INN ON 2 SEPERATE OCCASSIONS - EACH TIME THE FOOD HAS BEEN EXCELLENT, THE SERVICE VERY GOOD AND THE SURROUNDING FIRST CLASS. WE WILL CERTAINLY BE USING THE COUNTRYMAN AGAIN.
There is always Locally reared Beef, Lamb, Pork, chickens, & guinea fowl on the menu, as well as Locally shot Venison, Rabbit & pigeon. All Local Game Birds in season.... Home grown Vegetables, Salads & Herbs... and fish from boats at shoreham 15 miles away. The owner has been here for years and years and is passionate about using as much local produce as he can, the staff are smart and pleasant, and the restaurant is a picture with views over open fields where you can often spot fallow deer grazing, or pheasant strutting.
A family run rural pub/restaurant in the heart of the Knepp Castle Estate. The owner, Alan Vaughan, has been there for over 20 years, and has built up a reputation for serving quality local produce. Fish is collected Daily from Shoreham Harbour, Meat is supplied from local Farms breeding Limousin Cattle, Southdown Sheep, & Saddleback Pigs. Game is from the Castle estate where there are free roaming Fallow Deer, along with Pheasants and other game birds shot when in season. The pub Grows a range of vegetables, Herbs and Salads for use in the Restaurant, and this is subsidised by many local people bringing in their surplus crops from their gardens on a 'Barter'. What makes this pub so special is the dedication to supporting and serving local produce, where quality and service is more important than profit.
