Slice of Sicily brings a taste of traditional Italy to the village of Penwortham in Lancashire. From basil to tomatoes, ingredients are sourced from local farmers, and turned into fresh pestos, antipastos, and ciabattas. As well as the specialist deli counter, which stocks a range of classic Italian products, from olives to parma ham, a cosy seating area offers the chance to catch up with some friends over a cappuccino and a toasted panini.

Specialising in regional sicilian food Slice of Sicily is a little gem. Ettore makes a superb range of home made pestos, pickles and marinated vegetables and his spicy sicilian pesto is to die for. You can choose from a range of italian cheeses and charcuterie with expert advice. (Try the sicilian pecorino). You can also stock up on authentic quality italian storecupboard ingredients, flour, pastas, sauces and dried ingredients, biscotti and the best risotto rice I've tried and there's an interesting range of italian wines. The homemade italian sausage, dense, meaty and richly seasoned with fennel and other goodies is a mainstay in our freezer. The cafe menu ranges from superb customised paninis and salads, snacks such as the excellent arrancinci (addictive fried stuffed rice balls) to full meals. The coffee is the best in town. Etti also does wine tasting evenings with italian nibbles which are are great fun. The recent extension to the rear of the shop and the enlisting of his brother to the SoS team means it is now open Friday and Saturday evenings so you can chill with friends over a bottle of wine, italians style tapas or a full blown 3 course meal. Star turns include the the chicken livers, chick pea panisse fingers, roast suckling pig and the sausage casserole. The sweet tooted are also well catered for with a range of italian desserts and cakes. His most recent development - the best thin crusted authentic pizzas to eat in or take out that I have eaten in the UK - are completing the ruination of my waistline. He also puts togethe

Ettore (Etti!) and Catherine have become good friends since we met at the Lancashire farmers' markets. Not only does Etti produce fab pesto's, and other scrummy delights, (You have to try his marinated mushrooms; I can eat a pot in one go!) they also have a deli, specialising in all things Sicilian. Here you can also seek five minutes sanctuary, with a delicious panini, and gorgeous coffee; plans to expand the tiny eating area into something bigger can only be great news for downtown Penwortham! No matter how busy Etti is, he always takes the time to make you feel valued, can help 'chill you out', and make you laugh! 'Good luck', Guys! x p.s. Etti made me write this, otherwise he said he'd send 'The Boys' round!

Authentic italian deli, fab sandwiches, the parma ham and olives are to die for. SOS also attends lots of the local farmers markets too
