Since finding this fantastic bakery, we order our bread etc from here every week. It is well worth the extra coppers to buy and eat such scrummy bread!!! Owner and staff are wonderful friendly people. If you haven't found this bakery and tried their wares - then make the effort you won't want to buy mass produced bread again. B in Longton

it's a lovely little shop that's really close to where I live, and was recently visited by The Hairy Bikers! However, of late I've been a little disappointed in them, as one of the bakers has a tendency to burn the bread somewhat. They definitely need all the support they can get so that this little bit of heritage doesn't disappear.

My God I couldn't believe it when I walked in this bakery, my mouth hung open at the delicious aromas and the array of breads and cakes on display. All I can say to anyone is go to this shop and give your support to them because the staff are so friendly and helpful and they love their job and they deserve to be famous ....... Boz

This place is fab. I found it through the BigBarn website and I would never buy supermarket bread again. The low GI bread is to die for and I use it every day. The owner is very friendly, thank you for showing us your wonderful, historic ovens. The staff are also friendly and helpful and will go out of their way to make sure I get that low GI bread even if it is sold out! Thanks. You are definately a local food hero for me! Long live the independent shops!

I started to use the bakery some months ago when a friend of mine, who lives near the bakery and is a regular customer, recommended the bread. Now i don't get my bread from anywhere else, you just don't get bread like this from a supermarket. The low GI pumkin seed loaf is my favourite, it is simply the best sandwich bread I have ever eaten!!

Simply The Best. As a boy I have bought and eaten Bread and cakes from this shop. I forgot about how good the prodcts tasted with the onset of Supermarkets and lifes changing course itself. Recently I bought some bread from a church Fete and am once again hooked. I am seriously so sorry that with the passing of time I have settled for second best when buying bread. I am now once again a confirmed customer and I wish Sue and Marie. Good fortune ; you are truly artists in the field of Patisserie, etc., Best wishes. Geoff Cartwright, Penkhull.

The choice of bread is amazing, the quality is superb and the cakes-WOW!!! The staff are friendly and helpful. We would never eat supermarket bread again. Keep up the good work Marie & Sue.

Fabulous quality. Lots of unusual breads. Pick up a bargain; if they have any of yesterday's left they sell it off, advertised as still fresher than supermarket bread! My favourite is the low Gi Pumpkin & Sesame Seed.

A hidden gem! Excellent products and service. They also sell their breads at farmers markets.

The bread is great, baked on the premises using a 100 year old coal fired over. Tastes like "proper" bread, not supermarket plastic! The staff are very helpful. The cakes are wonderful too

I walk past this place every morning on my way to work and usually stop in for something sweet for breakfast. They do a range of different cakes, flapjacks etc but of course the most important thing is the bread. I've never seen so many varieties in my life, it seems that what they are able to make is limited only by their imagination! There are also a range of other local products, such as jams, eggs and honey (which has the benefit of protecting against hay fever, I'm told). What makes this place so special however are the two ladies who work there. Marie in particular always has a smile and a kind word to say, most helpful when I'm stumbling in still half-asleep! The brick-fired oven they use is around 150 years old, it's also said that a certain (albeit helpful) ghost inhabits part of the bakery.. I know that I will continue to shop there for as long as I live in Stoke, I sincerely hope that anyone reading this who hasn't had the chance to try their bread will go and find out for themselves how good it is!

This place is absolutely fabulous. It's like going to the Black Country Museum. There is said to be a ghost who appears now and then. The bread is marvellous. The baker has recently experimented with a mustard and cheese bread. I thought it was great to eat without anything but butter on it. My husband toasted it and said that that really brought out the flavour. The place is redolent of shops from the 1950s. Quite unique, marvellous and needing to be preserved.

Wandered in one day on my way home from work, never new this place existed and I HAVE LIVED HERE MOST OF MY LIFE, Fresh Butter Croissants, So many varieties of bread and georgeous cakes, it definately is Stoke's best kept secret

The most delicious variety of breads and cakes in the world! I live abroad and make sure I visit this bakery every time I come back to the UK. It's a real taste of home that you can't get anywhere else. It's worth a visit for the haunting ambience alone, one is never sure if it's flour in the air or a visiting spirit making sure the baking process continues to be done in the traditional way.

I now live in Leicester and I first tried this bread when I visited my sister in Stoke. I am on a low GI diet and tried their low GI bread with pumpkins seeds and it takes great, keeps well and does good me good too. What more could a girl ask.

We all work hard to produce the best quality hand-made breads and cakes as possible. We choose not to sell lower quality products to make more profit because we came here to preserve the serendipity that is our bakehouse. The ghosts of the original owners now seem to be on our side and where things used to disappear, they now appear whenever you need them. Our coal-fired oven has never had chance to cool since it was built in the late 19th century and we hope to keep it warm for another hundred years. We want the people of Stoke to vote for their oldest surviving traditional craft bakery simply because every single customer tells us it's the best tasting bread they have ever eaten. so come on, ducks!

Two very hard working ladies with a passion to survive, selling an above average product.

I'm orginally from S-o-T and i make sure that every time i travel back to my 'homeland', i don't miss out on the incredible treats offered at this bakery. The bread is divine and the cakes - well what more can i say, absolutely mouthwateringly delicious!!! Go to this venue, you won't be disappointed!

Wow what a discovery I made when I stumbled upon this little place! I have never tasted bread and cakes like this before and so cheap!!

dollface 1 dollface 1 Posted 14 Aug 2006 1:06 PM

You will never find bread that tastes this good anywhere else due to the coke fired ovens that they still use here. This is truly a unique place, like stepping back in time! The service is fantasic and the two ladies that own the place are always happy to show you the oven or tell you all about the history of the place. The only problem they have is that they don't stand out, I drove past the place 3 times before I saw it! I'm sure that if they could make the shop stand out more they would attract more customers and they wouldn't be struggling to make ends meet! This place is a little gem, somewhere we should be proud of and all work hard to preserve.

2 ladies bought the bakery as it was being sold for conversion to flats. It is still not making a profit but they carry on because they do not want this beautiful late victorian bakery and shop to close.

specialist and traditional breads baked in coke fired brick kiln ovens. They also do cakes and pastries. They will make any bread to your own requiresments, e.g. Irish Soda bread with sesame and poppy seeds, gorgeous.
