Café Delicatessen

Selling: Drinks, Meats

Set in the Northumberland countryside, and open daily, the British Beef Jerky shop produces a large variety of flavours of beef jerky - a high-protein dried beef snack – and biltong (the South African-style equivalent). All of the products are manufactured on site using the best cuts of north east England beef. Free tasters are provided every day. The adjoining tea room provides a place to relax while watching the free-range hens and allowing the kids to play outside. They provide an abundance of locally produced cakes and baked goods, with one of the more favourite items being free-range egg mayonnaise (from their own chickens) served in a stottie bun. I love this stuff. I first discovered it when I was dry stone Walling up in Alnwick on my drive up the A1. Whenever I'm back down south I always crave it so to be able to order on line is fantastic. Good service and a great product obviously made with passion - love the BBQ jerky!

My wife and I returned to England from New Zealand for a 5 week holiday basing ourselves near Berwick. On the way up we stopped by pure chance at Brian and Lindas were we were met in a warm friendly welcoming atmosphere and made to feel one of the family instead of just another couple of customers as so often happens. Lindas home made food is wonderful and moreish. We then got talking to Brian about his Biltong and his passion and enthuseism about his product was wonderful to see and listen too. Perhaps the most important thing of all was there was no hard sell you could sample any of his different flavours and if you did decide to buy some the price was very resonable. Having been brought up in Africa I love Biltong and Brians and Lindas Biltong is perhaps one of a very few if not the best and on a par with the true African wild cattle Biltong. It was so good that my wife who normally wont touch Biltong not only tried it but enjoyed it and ended up eating it for the remainder of our stay. We visited them again on several occasions during our stay and would reccomend them and their product to everyone. We have since returned to NZ but have reccomended them to friends travelling to UK. We wish them good luck for the future. Mike & Chris.

We have stocked Mr. BBQ products at Tully's of Rothbury for several years now. It has always been a good seller throughout the year, especially for farm workers and walkers, etc. It is testament to the quality of the product that our customers keep coming back for more.

I stock this product in my deli, and it is by far one of my best sellers with customers coming back for more. It is also a nutritious snack for walkers and cyclists. Nothing is too much trouble for Brian and Linda, no sooner have I ordered than it is there, very professional and friendly service

I have not been to the shop but hope to go there one day.I have had beef jerky from most parts of the U S and a lot of biltong when I was in South Africa.Mr BBQ'S tastes just like your Mum would make it's that good!

I grew up in Canada and have always loved jerky! Since moving to London I have not been able to find any good jerky that has the right amount of texture and taste. I got my first taste of British Bef Jerky at a food show from a friendly lady with a bunch of small tubs. I tried, enjoyed and bought right away. Now when I am low I can simply order online and it arrives the next day!

As a beef jerky lever, I've tried lots from both sides of the pond. My favorite, until now, was the award winning jerky from Oscar's mountain smoke house in the Adirondacks near Lake George. This stuff is damn good, but better still, you can taste the British beef and that makes them winners!

Not only do they have the best range of jerkey ever but it is the best jerkey ever. While browsing round the shop and tasting the samples it is nice to be able to talk to Brian or Linda while having a coffee in their newly opened cafe. All the sandwiches they sell contain locally produced produce , while the bread or "stottie" they use is made at a local farm bakery. If you require eggs in your sandwich you can select your own, freshly laid, direct from the nesting box! How fresh is that?

feltonskip feltonskip Posted 28 Jun 2008 12:25 AM

This is not just a Jerky shop. Brian and Linda have found a need for a tea shop just off of the busy A-1. They serve tea, coffee, fresh orange juice, Huge freshly made sandwich, their specialty is Free Range Egg & Mayo (from their own Hens), and tea cakes you would not believe, they are the size of the plate, (if you ask for the whole cake). They also have an abundance of local cakes and scones . All in all this is just a very nice place to stop and have a break and get something to eat, walk the dogs and kids and enjoy the beauty that is Northumberland. They even have FREE WiFi if you or the kids want to check your email on your laptop.

They use 250g of beef for 100g of Original Jerky that tastes like you are eating one of the best steaks ever. I have been to visit their shop a few times, and have tried every one of their range of Jerky. It is simply incomparable! Fantastic stuff! Also.. very friendly staff and a lot of free samples!

Having friends who have brought us much biltong and similar products (drywors, chilly bites, etc) from South Africa on their visits, we only wished we could get the same in England. On our way up to see Bamburgh Castle yesterday, we saw the sign on the A1 that Beef Jerky and Biltong was being sold and made a promise to ourselves we would have a look on our way back down. We were not disappointed, the taste is great, just like it's South African counterpart, ... fantastic! As we live over one and a half hours away, it is not particularly realistic to pay a visit every few weeks, so instead we wil be using the online delivery service! Thank you.

Awesome! Best jerky ever!

BungleMoogly BungleMoogly Posted 15 Aug 2007 8:03 PM

These are the most delicious products. The biltong is the best I have tasted outside South Africa. Alan Nicklin

jackdusty jackdusty Posted 15 Aug 2007 10:11 AM

I have enjoyed Beef Jerky for a number of years after first eating it in America. Then one day travelling on the A1 I noticed your van and decided that as soon as I could I would pop in and see what you had to offer. So this week my wife, son and I called in. After tasting the delights of your beef jerky we came out with a number of packets. The wife who always says it tastes a 'bit sweet' complained all the way home that I should have bought more because it is lovely! So it looks like I will be paying a lot more visits to your shop in the future. Well done on a brilliant service and a fantastic product! Nigel, Amanda and Christopher Patterson

Delicious tasty food - in an interesting outlet. Off the beaten track but worth the effort - try all flavours before selecting.

Excellent Jerky! And the Cajun Spiced tastes like it could have been made back in my home town! Well worth the trip out there and I like the fact you can taste before you buy!

My husband just loves beef jerky. He had me try some of the jerky he would buy in Tesco and ASDA and it was just not for me. I was traveling along the A1 one day and saw a yellow truck and it said British Beef Jerky so i dropped in to buy some for my husband. The people in the shop were so nice and helpful and they even talked me into trying their jerky and as they said this is not like the stuff from the stores. I fell in love with their jerky. There is no comparison to the commercial brands. I am now a fan. I always stop at the shop whenever i travel the A1. I just can't help myself.

amy16 amy16 Posted 11 Jul 2007 7:31 AM

Excellent service and loved the jerky, distinctive style, excellent packaging and striking graphics.

michael18 michael18 Posted 10 Jul 2007 9:30 PM

I eat a hell of a lot of jerky, then driving south one day I found this place. O yes this jerky leaves all others in the shade, I will only purchase it form these in future.

cavealaska cavealaska Posted 10 Jul 2007 8:40 PM

Delightful, Simply delightful. I never once thought i would like something like jerky until i tried British Beef Jerky. Just the thought of dried beef gives one the notion of something not tasteful. But once i tried the jerky made by Mr. BBQ i was won over by their delightful and varied tastes. You now have a delighted fan who shall spread the word.

I was glad to hear that you have been put forward for Local Food Hero. I will be telling all of my friends, family and mates to log on and vote for you. I hope you win.

marty6 marty6 Posted 30 Jun 2007 6:32 AM

It is nice to see a small company who takes pride in their products and will not settle for less. I hope you all the best in your Local Food Hero campaign and i am sure many of your customers will vote for and support you in this effort. I have yet to hear anything negative from any of my friends who have tried the jerky and biltong other than they consume it too fast. Cheers

mick19 mick19 Posted 30 Jun 2007 3:42 AM

I can't remember the last time i had jerky as good as that made by Mr. BBQ. They have taken the time to go back and make jerky and biltong as it was intended to be made and as it should taste without all of the additives that are found in the commercial products offered now days. My hats off to you and your staff. I hope you get the recognition your fine products deserve .

Called in to your store today and got me some garlic beef jerky. Thanks for an original, healthy alternative to the usual snack.

I was back in Northumberland for the weekend, saw the lorry on the A1 and called in. Very friendly and helpful service. Bought some biltong and demolished it. Absolutely lovely, really enjoyed it and looking forward to trying more.

I have tried numerous types of Beef Jerky, Mr BBQ offers the best service and product I have come across. Their tasty Jerky is fantastic and their customer service is second to none. Thank you Mr BBQ and well done.

Shavesy Shavesy Posted 12 Jun 2007 12:09 PM

Mr BBQ/ British Beef Jerky is fantastic! The quality of meat used for their jerky and biltong is one of the best i have ever come across. It is so tender yet it gives you just the right chewing resistance that Jerky should have. Mr BBQ has really managed to get the correct amount of pepper, spice etc with their meats so that it enhances the meat. Their customer service is very good too, they are always friendly and get back to you quikly! I can highly recommend Mr BBQ/ British Beef Jerky.

The best beef jerky available, easily beats all other UK marketed jerky. The lemon peppered is almost addictive. 10/10
