View all reviews (36)I think nothing of the 60 mile round trip to this great butcher. Quality is always superb. The shoulder of pork is hand scored to produce the best crackling ever. The sirloin is always superbly tender when roasted as a joint. Try getting a couple of kilos sealed and roasted for 40 minutes, leave it to stand for another 10 and you'll never want to buy your beef from anywhere else. Also try the minty lamb racks - they are superb value for money. My son loves the homemade ckicken liver pate and eats it by the potful. I cannot fault the quality or the service.
Well, UKTV Food, you say you're looking for supporters of the community, this business certainly does that with unconditional support for local schools, charites and voluntary organisations. All the meat sold in the shop and restaurant is sourced locally and Mr Chadwick himself visits the local farms. All the staff live within the local area and the family regularly welcome catering students from the local colleges for tours and cutting demonstrations. Local residents, unable to visit the shop, receive home delivery - free of charge and with no minimum spend and the business built and maintains the only public toilets in the area. The quality and taste of the produce sold is the best in the area and the service is outstanding. The Chadwick family are committed to the business, which grows from strength to strength, and as the business is now in its fourth generation, there's plenty of stories to tell and Mr Chadwick lives to work rather than works to live as Mrs Chadwick can testify! The trade and passion of the skilled, craft butcher lives on in this business. HERO We’re looking for: • Commitment Our heroes should demonstrate sound business practice, confront the challenges they face with tenacity, and treat their valued customers with respect. These will be people who have a story to tell and can communicate their passion to others. They deliver above and beyond expectation and their trade is more than a job – it’s a way of life. • Passion Instead of compromising quality in favour of making a fast buck from food produced o
I would like to second all the comments below regarding the quality of the food – in particular the meat – provided by Chadwicks. Can anyone out there find an independent food retailer in the UK – or anywhere else for that matter – that has developed its own small abattoir, cutting room, food hall, and café bar/restaurant, all on one site? If you can, then you can bet your last penny it was done first by Chadwicks. However, my reason for nominating this retailer is not just because of the food it serves. It’s because of the services to the Meat Industry that Mr Chadwick has offered over the past 10 years – which very few people know about. In 1998, concerned over the failure of existing Meat Industry organisations to represent the interests of small abattoirs, Mr Chadwick founded the Small Abattoir Federation (SAFe). Unlike many organisations that collect subscriptions from their members in order to pay salaries to their representatives, SAFe does not – it is entirely voluntary. Mr Chadwick refuses to be paid for any of the work he undertakes on behalf of small abattoirs. He has worked tirelessly for safeguarding the interests of small abattoirs, and was pivotal in ensuring that the campaign to change the charging structure for meat hygiene inspection (i.e. Headage Rate) was successful – often meeting with MPs and government ministers to ensure the changes necessary to guarantee the survival of small abattoirs were implemented. The government has acknowledged his expertise, and in 1999 Mr Chadwick was invited to sit on the Meat Hygiene Service Industry Forum. His opinions are sought when legislation, which will affect the Meat Industry, is being drafted. In 2002, Mr Chadwick was asked to sit on the Meat Hygiene Policy Forum, which meets on a quarterly basis. He uses every opportunity available to him to ensure that he gives the owners of small abattoirs a public voice. Mr Chadwick’s contribution has saved many small abattoirs from closing, as the changes to the charging structure have allowed them to continue to operate. Mr Chadwick also provides free expert advice on any problem a small abattoir owner may be facing in running his business and/or complying with legislation – something that many members of SAFe have taken advantage of. This retailer – and in particular Mr Chadwick – is a Food Hero. Period.
We first started visiting Chadwicks in January last year (2006) and we have never been back to a supermarket for our meat and poultry. I visit at least once a week and our shopping now includes not only the meat but also home-cooked pies, eggs, barmcakes, and sauces - all produced by local businesses. I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful and I have always been able to park and get my purchases to the car with no problems at all. Basically I know that whatever I buy from here will be excellent quality because that is what this business is all about.
Pouring down with rain, I wasn't looking forward to my weekly Saturday shop but my spirits lifted when I arrived at Chadwicks. Members of the family were out on the car park, soaked to the skin, running to and from cars hading out and collecting back in umbrellas. A simple touch but one very much appreciated by everybody who travels to Chadwicks. So many retailers have jumped on the bandwagon and sell "local food", Chadwicks were and still are pioneers and as somebody else has said on this link, the original and the best.
This shop is simply wonderful and the commitment to local produce is outstanding. Why anybody would live near here and prefer to buy their meat from a supermarket, I just don't know.
This family run business is a true supporter of local, English and British produce and for me that's what a local food hero is about. Lancashire Whisky, Wigan Honey and Uncle Joe's are all made nearby and all sold in the shop. They hold special events for English Wine Week and British Food Fortnight every year and are currently in the middle of A Taste Of Summer fortnight - the hand dipped chocolate strawberries are to die for. The restaurant is serving "Merry Jelly" - an alcoholic strawberry jelly which I'm hoping to find the time to try. The meat is of a consistently high quality and all sourced locally and slaughtered on site. This business attracts customers from all over the North West and justifiably so.
Funny that this year there's a number of comments about a policy that was introduced in 2004 and has nothing to do with the produce this business sells....and there's me thinking that this was a competition to find a FOOD HERO!! This business has been copied many times most recently by a cafe bar which opened on the same street and launched with a copy of 1817's menu!!! Still the original and the best. Recognised as a Food Miles hero by the Farmers' Weekly and shortlisted as one of the Best Local Food Retailer in last year's Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards. Whether this business wins or not, it will always be my food hero.
I LOVE this place and Mr Chadwick is a true hero and I've made a welcome return to his shop. It's disappointing that some reviews have made untrue claims about this business and I'd like to set the record straight. Sadly, the selfish actions of others caused me no end of problems when, after travelling 30 miles, I found the car park full but the shop not as busy as a full car park would indicate. This business guarantees to find a car parking space for any of its customers and I for one support this 100% and can't think of any other business that does this. Anybody that's moaning or claiming they're upset by not being able to park and wander off are doing so because they're the ones that caused the problems in the first place! This business is AMAZING and with a slaughterhouse, cutting room, food hall and fully licensed restaurant, it's in a class of its own!
How much community spirit do you want? Free burger, sausages and gift vouchers to local school, cubs, scouts, brownies, guides, boys' brigades and sponsors of Wigan and Leigh Hospice. Providers of the ONLY public toilets in the town. They do not employ car parking attendants so I don't know why you claim they do. Yes, members of staff are on the car park but their main role is to help customers and provide little extras such as a brolly to car service. I've never found the staff on the car park rude but then again I've never been rude to them!
Excellent meat and really good food in the cafe but the parking policy and the attendants' rudeness does cause ill feeling amongst many people. A bit more community spirit would not go amiss. Can't fault the produce and it is still the best meat for miles around.
There's no intimidating parking policy and I've found the charge for tap water discourages those who have in the past sat and hogged tables for hour upon hour whilst people wanting to enjoy some freshly prepared food have been left disappointed. The Chadwick family have worked hard to establish a successful business based on sourcing the best local quality produce and keeping food miles to the lowest possible. This business plays a massive role in supporting the local community - I don't think you could find a school, charitable organisation or voluntary group that hasn't been helped. A wonderful example to us all and the standard that all food retailers should follow.
I agree with everything already said about the quality of the produce, but find this is spoilt by their very intimidating parking policy and the fact that they charged for tap water when having a meal there recently.
I shop at Chadwicks every week for my fresh meat, the presentation and quality is outstanding. Its quality even if frozen still tastes fantastic. It is rare these days to find such a good butchers on your doorstep since the massive market takeover of supermarkets.
Chadwicks is essentially a quality butcher providing quality, value-for-money produce in a friendly environment in a day and age wheen traditional butchers are being muscled out. In addition they are a delicatessen and have an adjoining restaurant. Food is a pleasure here!
The familys commitment to quality, service and their focus on the local suppliers and the community is second to none. Rob&Edith
The Chadwick's emporium of fine foods has been feeding the village of Standish since 1761. All the meat and poultry sold by Chadwick's is locally sourced and of the highest quality. Five years ago the butchers turned into a fine food emporium, celebrating local and niche culinary delights. In addition, a fantastic brasserie, '1817', serves delicious light lunches and, now, evening meals. Locally employed staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the products and services they are providing. A first rate establishment and a real local hero.
*****EXCELLENT MEAT***** My uncle regualy comes from the Isle Of Man to get his supply of Chadwicks meat to take back with him. Our family won't get our meat from anywhere else.
I am originally from Wigan but now live in Birmingham. I travel back to Wigan at least once a month to stock up on all the fabulous meats and foods at Chadwicks (and to see family of course). The staff are the most friendly I have come across and I have failed to find such good quality meats in the whole of the West Midlands.
A local family who, over the years, have built up a small family butchers into a thriving butchers, deli and restaurant. The quality of the food is second to none and you are always guaranteed a warm & friendly welcome from all of the staff.
They sell the best meat, it's all local produce and provide a great service
The food is of excellent quality and value for money. I will not buy meat from the supermarket after buying it from Chadwicks, you can really taste the difference. The staff are wonderful always cheerful and friendly, it is a pleasure to shop there.
This Butchers has already won a pretigious Best Small Business UK Award. The choice of Meat and Speciality Food is Fantastic and the Meat is sourced locally. The attached Restaurant to the Butchers serves delicious food. It is always popular and is just the sort of place that this award should go to.
Chadwick's have a simple recipe - excellent food at very affordable prices. We made the switch from buying meat at our supermarket to Chadwick's a couple of years ago and no going back. Craig
Try the meat here and you'll never go back to a supermarket again! The bacon is superb, the steaks are just heavenly - and there is something reassuring about knowing exactly where it all comes from. I feel sorry for people who don't get to have a shop like this locally, it really is fantastic quality from staff who clearly know their produce, and also incredible value for money. Love it!
THEY SELL THE BEST MEAT AND POULTRY I HAVE EVER SEEN, THE STAFF ARE WONDERFULL, AND MR CHADWICK LOOKS LIKE A REAL BUTCHER BIG ROUND TUMMY AND ROSEY CHEEKS.
This man has the perfect attitude to become a food hero. He loves his work and the food he produces. A man dedicated to producing the best that is possible, the quality is second to none.
aiways on time meat is lovely prices are right the staff are the best hygene is 100% forget the rest chadwicks are the best
The most delicious lamb and beef i have ever tasted. Always service with a smile. The connected restaurant is outstanding value for money for great food and the service is second to none.
Hi.I'm Jeanette,I'm one of the daughters of John Chadwick.I trained as a butcher(guess there isn't many female butchers around)since I left school. I now work on the deli counter. All the staff from the cleaner to the M.D.give 100% to make your visit worthwhile
I travel from Liverpool twice a week all the way to Standish because the quality is just so good.Everything they sell is of such high quality, I just don't know how they do it. Steaks, sausages and pies are particularly worth trying. 100% commitment from the Chadwick family. Well done.
QUALITY AND SERVICE IS ALWAYS EXCELLENT WE HAVE INTRODUCED FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND THEY ALL SAY THE SAME. ALL THE STAFF ARE HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY
The quality of the food and service are fantastic, I travel an hour out of my way just to purchase my meat from here
Everything about this place is wonderful - it's apparently the only place in the world to have a slaughterhouse, cutting room, shop and restaurant all on the same site. The family all know their stuff too and all the meat is sourced from local farms. FANTASTIC!
Totally unique and the owner thinks there is no place like it in the world! All meat is sourced from local farms and beef and lamb is slaughtered, prepared and served through the shop and restaurant all on the same site. The owner is passionate about the quality of the food he sells and this enthusiasm is shared by the staff. The only wine on sale is English and Scottish - not quite so local but vines don't grow that well in Wigan!
It's a family company that has been around for a long time. It has made a lot of itself growing from a small village butchers to a reknowned restaurant and emporium.
